you have fear of a higher power that stops many people from doing many wrong things that they would have otherwise done with no further thought.
Without religion most only believe they have one chance in life. That makes MANY people not want to screw it up. MANY atheist also have to obey the government to an extent- who wants to waste a limited life in prison?
There is always a higher power that you have to fear-the government/general public.
Yes, about your 'fear the government', sometimes that is not enough.... why do you think there are so many prisons with so many people in them??
Oh yea, and 'only one chance at life' also makes people do the dumbest and most irrational things, cuz 'oh heck with it, I only have one life! I may as well do what ever I want!!'
Face the facts... in countries with a strong religious empowerment, there are much lower crime rates....

Ah yes, the thousands of MAINLY RELIGIOUS people who didn't fear god enough to not do it. Your point?

That has happened far fewer times than someone has, say burned a witch or not taken blood because of there religion. For every time you name one person who did that, I could name to who did something negative because they believed in the after life.

...Do you have proof in these statistics? Because places like America and Mexico are pretty famous for there gangs, and both are religious... Any chart from a reliable neutral source?
Hey wait! I never said that atheists make up the most in jail!! I am replying to his statement of 'fear of government'! obviously we all agree that people don't fear the government enough. that was my point.
Let me explain my original comment: People fear a higher entity and it stops them from doing alot of wrong they would have normally done. Let us go to a setting where there is two groups of people. One group is religious, one is not. They are both against eachother and there is a fued going on. The non religious group would have no fear about punishment if they killed any of the other group. The religious group however, would.
you want a positive thing? How about this: Religious people believe that there is someone watching all the time, no matter the time, no matter where; most also believe that God knows what they are thinking... therefore, religous people WILL commit less wrong. If there is a situation where the person knows that the government cannot hold him accountable due to laws, need of evidence, etc. he will have no problem doing the wrong. A person who fears God, won't.
I ask you to email this person, because they are much more knowledgable than I am.

This is extremely hypothetical and made up, you using only stereotypes.
Let me put it this way-10% are atheist but only .2% of prisons are filled with atheist. Obvious IT DID NOT help the 99.8% of people in the way you stated it did.

Then explain why the prisons are full of theist. It obviously does not work out as your hypothetical s state.

And I would assume pretty closed minded as well, and unlike on this forum I would have to keep the argument myself ultimately leading to me getting less sleep than I currently do...
I gave you what I can. I am not a scholar. Oh, and I am getting the distinct impression that my time is wasted on you. I am sorry. You can email the email I gave you.

Its a simple question, you don't have to be a scholar to answer it...
