First: i didn't know where this topic should be, so i thought i put it in the tavern
But i hear from a lot of friends that video games improved their english, and a teacher of mine said: boys who don't do a thing but gaming score low in every subject, except for English. What's your opinion about it? Did you also learn other languages other then English?
This is a good question. People don't actually doubt the good side of the games... but usually hide it. My english is one of the best... and only nolife-gamers (unlike me!) were better in it than I am. Not only did I learn english here... Alot of languages have improved... I even learned finnish and Danish from it!
Other subjects? Well.... If you look at a community like this one... we get alot of views on alot of subjects... In games... you usually do learn about things like physics, which is good for science, or things to improve relfection etc... which makes you better in subjects like music. (Think of guitar hero for example). Shooters often also give a good hand-eye coordination... which can be used in sports...
I never really thought of that. It might have. I played a lot of Gameboy games when I was learning to read English, so I read a lot. I didn't have low grades in my other classes though.
Yea it really does! 2 years ago I used to play RuneScape and it enhanced my vocabulary a lot, I learn new words like stove, rod, wear, wield, helm and many others. Now I am actually learning english with AG, but I can't know wheter I'm typing things correctly or not =S
I used to play Maplestory, and it taught me how to type faster. Being a merchant does that to ya.
And I have learned quite much English from video games. I've even learned history from video games. I've learned many things from video games.....though I play much RPG:s, and there you get allot of text.
I learned basic english by playing Morrowind. It has quite a good english. When I started playing I needed help to understand what to do, with time I could more or less accurately guess what it all was about, and as soon as english lessons started in school I could fill my lacunes. There were other games, MMORPGs, I also played in english, but these just helped getting experience in writing to people.
Yes they improved my english very much. Before I started to chat wiith other players in MMOs I knew only the basics from school. English is not my native language though.
