I know there's the "Hey do you like me" way, but then when people are approached directly they lie, and this makes me angry. How can I get an honest answer form the person that I like? I asked, but then said person said no. And How do I know if said person really doesn't like me or doesn't want to say so in front of said persons friends.

There are indeed signs that show if she at least has "artial" interest in you. This helped me for my ex-girlfriend, as you could read her like a book.
If you talk to her, pay attention to her eyes. If she never takes her eyes off you, then you have a shot at looks. If, during a conversation, asks you random questions that involves you, then she's interested in you and what you are doing. If you have your own group of friends, she may try to fit in with your group just to be around you. Which is good. Creepy, but good. If she talks about an upcoming party or anything that involves her and says "wanna come?", that means she wants you there and would have more fun if you came. If anything else, if she wants to "interact" with you. Such activities like an arm wrestle or other silly teenager games that involves touching, then you're in for the clear.

if you wanted to know if the girl likes you even though she said no when you ask her, try to make her jealous or try not to talk to her for 1 week and observe how she will react to it, if she talks to you within that week then that means she feel something for you.
