The topic says it all.

Why do governments feel the need to make drugs illegal? If anything, it causes a lot more problems than there were before. If they were legalized, there would not be nearly as many violent actions over getting them since the prices would not be nearly as high. There would not been as many people over doing it with drugs, since it would eventually just become a normal thing in day-to-day life.

thats a terrible idea... there would be more violent actions then there are now

1.)If they were cheap everyone would be able to buy them.
2.)If people get there hands on a lot they can overdose and kill themselvs or get high and maybe kill someone else!

It would be a good idea to legalize drugs. It would lessen the cost of drugs greatly to legalize them, this could have the consequence of everyone buying them as IRuleya said; however, most people are not stupid, and second it would decrease violent crime against other people for two reasons. First, there would be less robberies, larcenies, burglaries,and auto thefts for people to pay for expensive habits. Second, it would destabilize gangs; think to how the mafia and Al Capone rose to power in the '20s and the murder rate rose 70%, then compare that to the Bloods and Crips. Without money flowing, no one would join violent gangs.
Another bonus to legalizing is that it will reduce costs for prisons and expand police resources. More than 50% of police resources are used for catching drug user, manufacturers, and dealers. 1% of all Americans are in prison, over 60% for drug use, think of how much less money would have to be spent on building and maintaining more prisons if we legalized.
Finally, legalization would lead to a substantial economic upturn, we would start making money off of exports and we would have tourists come much like they do in Amsterdam. Marijuana could also be used for medicinal purposes.
@BIGBADEVAN- do not simply dismiss an idea because you have always been told to disagree with it, look at the facts for both sides of the argument and then make an informed decision. Also, once again most people will not start using drugs in greater numbers; nor are drugs poisonous, they just screw with your mind, much like religion does; besides people have a choice and most will not choose to do drugs, further it will allow drug users to come out and seek help quitting.

Oh, I forgot, legalizing would allow the government to put a slight excise tax on drugs, which would allow them to regulate purity, so you do not get Drano and battery acid in your drugs, it would also regulate production so you do not get dangerous meth cooking operations which can explode and destroy a large area.

That's not a reason...that's a rationalisation!*

"Dude, the government's totally, like, a neofascist totalitarian police-state!"

* The real reason can be described as the sum of cultural processes and political and economic factors that resulted in the current legislation. The definitions of "reason" and "rationalisation" are tricky ones.

The goverment shouldn't legalize drugs because if they did life would be crazy! The crime rate would be really high because people wouldn't know what they are doing because they are so screwed up! That's pretty much just saying that you can go get drunk all you want then go kill someone and get a DUI and never go to prison! So, they should not legalize drugs.

@Aids & IRuleya
- Quit spamming.

@Ascender
- I repeat, most people have the common sense not to use drugs and if you read my earlier post you would see that having drugs remain illegal will only increase violence and empower gangs. During Proibition murder rates rose 70% and dropped afterwards. Ever since the "War on Drugs" began murder & violent crime rates have continued to rise. Legalization will cause less harm to innocents, do not be so narrow-minded.

@Depretis
- Why would someone not be punished for a violent crime if drugs are legalized, that makes no sense at all. However, people have been getting off the hook more for violent crimes because of illegalizing drugs. Our prison systems are massively overcrowded and the government wants to punish drug offenders as much as possible, its solution- offer parole more often to violent criminals to make room for drug users. That is far worse than your scenario, it allows for much more violent chaos.

What the hell.
Really.
Because you know, people are so much better when they're on drugs. Making them legal would only make the world a better place [/sarcasm]
