The topic says it all.

Why do governments feel the need to make drugs illegal? If anything, it causes a lot more problems than there were before. If they were legalized, there would not be nearly as many violent actions over getting them since the prices would not be nearly as high. There would not been as many people over doing it with drugs, since it would eventually just become a normal thing in day-to-day life.

If they do legalise, obviously there needs to be some restrictions, such as age, amount taken and type of drug (ie stimulant/depressant/hallucinogen)

Also, the first drug to be legalised should be cannabis. It's been scientifically proven to relieve stress and help with pain for all patients, from cancer to eye problems.

but the people who abuse it will be abundant.there's a reason drugs are banned.

It looks like everything I wanted to say about this topic has been said:

-Legislation is a poor substitute for education (We are creatures that learn. We are also social creatures. Purely social taboos hold more power than legal taboos.).

-We cannot fully predict the effect that passing/repealing laws will have on this matter.

-Illegality is a huge reason teens try out street drugs. (It's called "rebellion.&quot

-Illegality helps breed organized crime.

-Drugs already legal have proven more dangerous.

My stand on each drug will follow shortly.

Sherm, paternalistic laws never go over well.

I like to think about it this way. Legalizing drugs would have it's benefits and it's problems.

Benefits:

- In the case of heroin --> Set up clinics for heroin users. There are going to be addicts whether it is legal or not. So, in these clinics it keeps the addicts off the street and stops the spread of disease from dirty needles. This also will help our health care system because they will be regulated.

- Marijuana --> There are numerous studies that show marijuana is one of the safest things to put in your body. It has so many benefits and almost NO long-term side effects. If the government put a tax on it, but didn't regulate it a lot then we could get ourselves out of debt quickly.

- Acid, Shrooms, Salvia, etc - The drugs you trip on. These are the ones that also cause a lot of damage to your brain and spine with a lot of use. But you can't control what people do, because they will do it anyway. Someone up there said something about age limit. I agree with that. I think that it would be worse on you if your brain hasn't developed fully.

- Opiates - same as the above.

Well now. This thread has certainly grown. And, I can't believe some of the things I've read. In here it either worst case nightmarish world ruin, or, controlled chaotic regulation.

In my opinion, marijuana, maybe shrooms, and salvia would be it. Though technically salvia isn't illegal, yet. Heroine, cocaine, meth, X, LSD, peyote, mesculine, microdots, etc., by all common sense, no way.

Pot and the others can be an in-direct killer. Car accident or carless action resulting serious harm or worse, yeah. But heroine, cocaine, opium, meth, crack, X, will kill you. Not by going the long way around. It will f*****g kill you!

Look, when I 17 I almost died when I mistook some pretty pure coc for some bunk. Ya know how in Pulp Fiction Uma thermun gets an adrenilin shot in the chest ot revive her, same thing but your tied down to a hospital bed and you feal like a train has just hit you, backed up over you then blow up all over you. Tube in your nose pushing saline into you r stomach then a cup full of charcoal for the rinse out. They do that alcohol poisoning as well. The charcaol shot anyways.

When it comes to those typees of drugs, the only outcome for them is either, jail, rehab, or death. I have never seen a middle ground where an addict wakes up one day and is perfectly fine. I can't even the possibility of them becoming legal. It is honestly the most rediculous thing I've ever heard. Sorry Ash, but that's my opinion.

I challenge any user on this site who thinks otherwise to go a crack/heroine/meth/opium-house. I don't mean your friend who scores some smack everyonce in a while's house. I mean go that part of town where the dirt never seems to wash away, no matter how much it rains. Where men and women alike can where each others cloths because they are so skinny you can't tell the difference anyway. Where prostitution isn't hidden, even from the cops. Find that house with all the random stuff in the yard, like a fridge or a car with no doors, a garden gnome thats broken, or person sleeping in the middle of the yard. H#ll it could be a trailor park even. Go to that house and just hang out with the inhabitants. And trust me, they live in groups. You'll find some scruffy bearded guy with red eyes, twitchey moves, scratching alot, maybe just one flip flop, an ol t shirt with an indisernable picture of some cartoon show long since cancelled, and talk to him. Ask him how he got there. The events leading up to this. And don't be surprised if he either robs you with a broken nail file or offers up a sexual favor for money or a hit from pipe with residue weeks old. Then and only then try and tell me why anything stronger than maybe pot should be legal.

I personally have seen the gateway effect of pot, and I've know people that have tried anything stronger than it. But, all the same, you decide.

I am not a drug user of any sort, HATE second hand smoke, and I am also catholic. I really don't see the point of drugs being legalized, other than the economical effects such as taxing them or anything, but my opinion is that they shouldn't be legalized, because there has to be another way to improve our economy other than legalizing deathly/harmful substances.

About little children confusing drugs with candy, I have seen studies where when little children were asked which was over-the-counter/prescription drug and which was candy, most of the time they couldn't tell, so it seems to me that the main concern there is just confusing candy with everyday stuff that will kill you, and not that if it is legalized that kids WILL automatically pick it up.

I also agree with Asherlee about the heroin clinics, but even though marijuana isn't as harmful as most other drugs, it still is classified as a drug, and is addicting. I don't really know much else about all the effects of drugs, other than they are unhealthy, they can kill you, and they are very addicting.

If we absolutely HAVE to legalize them, then at least put an age limit on them, hopefully making them illegal until the age the human brain has fully developed, and that before anyone can buy them, there has to be some way to educate people about the harms of all drugs. Hopefully that will make people think twice about doing drugs.

The only reason that the age restriction should be there is that since the area of the brain that sizes up decisions and thinks about risks and befits is one of the last areas of the brain to develop, which is why so many teens succumb to peer pressure. Since I am a teen, in our defense, and in my experience, I think that the more educated we are, the less likely we are to make decisions that negatively impact our lives, like drugs. Once that area of the brain is developed, it is that persons free will to do drugs or not, and if they are legal or not, that will not make any difference at all. The only thing that really affects the decision to do drugs or not are that person's past experiences, which for Ichibon look like what happened when he was 17 and even just the stuff it looks like he's seen, means he will most likely NOT do drugs.

All that said, I don't think drugs should be legalized and if they are, they absolutely need an age restriction. I can't stress that enough, because the last thing I want to see is one or more of my friends or me getting their life messed up from drugs

Prohibition in the US caused more consumption of alcohol and the rise of organized crime. By keeping drugs illegal, more people want to use them, and drug lords gain more power.

Because we keep drugs illegal, terrorist groups like the Taliban, FARC, right wing paramilitaries, and rebel groups all over the world can exist. They get the vast majority of their funds by selling drugs. If nations around the world would legalize and control the drug trade, then the Taliban and al-Qaeda could not have funded 9/11, FARC couldn' terrorize Colombia, the Shining Path could not have killed tens of thousands in Peru, and other terrorist groups would cease to exist.

Another issue is that drugs fuel pimping and prostitution. To keep his ladies from leaving, a pimp will get his girls addicted to heroine or crack. The girls loose all their money and must rely on prostituting for the rest of their lives to keep up the drug habit. Countries like The Netherlands and Germany saw this connection. They legalized drugs and prostitution. The rate of drug users plummeted, and prostitutes are no longer controlled by abusive pimps who jack them up with drugs. Pimping is non-existent in those nations. If people would see what has happened in Germany and in The Netherlands, they would realize that legalizing these two things would not increase drug use, but it actually decreases drug use, and makes life safer for women.

People on this thread are coming up with great reasons why or why not legalizing drugs. Good Job! But first, I want to point out that alcohol is legal, so the part about "more drunk drivers" is not true, or not connected with Legalizing drugs. On the other hand, we Might have more high drivers, and that is dangerous.

Now, to why or why not drugs should be legalized. I think they should. People on this thread say that the result would be chaotic, But in reality I believe it would be little worse than it is now. You might say more people will get drugs, but that is only true to a small scale. Anyone who wants any drug can get it. It just costs a lot of money. By legalizing drugs, the price would go down, the crime rate would drop, and the government would cut off funding for the Taliban. Now, you might wonder where the Taliban comes into this, and I'll tell you: In the middle east, most farmers grow drugs. They grow them because they can sell for a lot more money than food can. That is due to drugs being illegal. The Taliban gets funding from these farmers by taking their money and buying their drugs to sell. If drugs were legalized, the price would drop, and farmers would start growing something that sells for more money, like cotton or food.

This is just a theory, so something way different might happen, I'm not sure. But making drugs illegal does not help.
