Ernie, you need to be shown some good death metal >_<
And you can't spell "Metal is utter s*it" without "metal".
Lol, I'm sure we are all generous enough to give you another chance at saying a better comeback.
I really don't think Metal can be said by itself; it has so many subgenres. I prefer power metal, as it has clean, powerful lyrics with rich harmonies. It does not incorporate any screamo or screeching guitar sounds, as I imagine that's what Ernie is talking about.
A majority of the power metal artists have alto or tenor vocalists. The exception is Sabaton, where Broden has a baritone voice. That doesn't mean he plays all low notes though; he plays great melodies, just that they are an octave lower than the norm. Think of a trombone or a baritone playing the lead part or a solo in a concert band, instead of a trumpet or flute.
Truth be told, I haven't been exposed to the various sub-genres of metal, but I believe Power metal is the "cleanist".
None of these are *just* death metal because these guys are all good musicians and incorporate other elements into the music.
Power metal can sometimes blur the lines between metal and hard rock. I like Kamelot the most, because Roy Khan has a fantastic voice and a huge vocal range.

When some bands create sweet songs, they sometimes incorporate *GASP* acoustic guitars. Sabaton's lead guitarist actually brought a harp with him to do "The Hammer Has Fallen". Would have been such a better song if it wasn't part of their first album. Low quality, shaky voice and all that.
It's fun to see a battle between two COMPLETELY different genres! Probably because the starter of this thread likes one genre (Metal) and hates the other (Rap), but fine... :P
Both genres have good songs in them! Rap was on it's peak in the late 80's/early 90's and Metal has been going on a little longer than that, but also has some disturbing aspects to it, so... I'll call it a draw and split my vote for the two of them!
1/2 a point for Rap and 1/2 a point for Metal
But if you had included "Rock" in this battle, I'd definitely disgard the both (Rap AND Metal) of them and give my vote to ROCK! Without thought... heheh :P
I like rap's subjects- a lot of rappers express their ideas on racism and violence etc. I think that's pretty cool, because it isn't just for the music itself. Meanwhile, Metal is kind of, well... Most of the time it's just pointless screaming and drums that blast your ears off. Metal and Rap are just ways for 11 year old guys to show off to each other.
I like alternative stuff way better than either, though.
It really takes a good ear to understand metal. Rap is all just the same beat same word running along the same stroy line. Rap seems to lose its passion after the 5th time you hear the word the police hate me, metal seems to really connect and these are my thoughts in my own world. But long live the Metal gods
i never really did like rap even though i lived in the hood for the first 10 yrs of my life. i have always liked things i can head-bang to or try to do the awesome drum beats which i end up failing at. and like cen said its hard to compare genres because they are totally different. try comparing two songs from the same genre and see what happens.
