Then after that I'll just play online. That's what those games rely on. Just the online play.

Which is probably why those games are so popular. After all, a game that is solely made on having a story as a top priority can't possibly have any replay-value (looking specifically in the direction of stuff like FF XIII, and possibly Heavy Rain although I haven't tried that one) and fails in being a "game" in my opinion.

Just look at old NES games. Did Mario games need an epic story? Did Megaman? Did Sonic (I know that's not NES but a fine example of how story can eventually ruin you)?Did Metroid (And they screwed this one up big)? Only veeeery few NES games even had cutscenes to begin with. And I hear those were pretty popular . So why does every new game these days NEED super amazing cutscenes, when you didn't 20 years ago?

its not the story that makes it captivating its more the general plot

You can't honestly tell me that anyone of you keeps replaying games solely for the story, because if you do you might as well read a book or watch a movie. From my experience, most "story"-games just end up on my shelf, never to be replayed again.

Personally I'd rather have more "game" then cutscene in my games. Not to mention, if you go cut out all the hyper-advanced visual movies, you end up with lots of space which lets you add more stuff to your game.

The Tales series as a whole is criminally underrated. Nowadays I like those more then Final Fantasy (both in gameplay and story). Oh and you totally need to mention Tales of Vesperia too

You young ones...I swear, if you knew about tales of destiny, you'd probably get an orgasm just playing it. Much better storyline and gameplay mechanic; it's quite simply the best tales studio offered us; if you still have a Ps1 or 2, try to buy tales of destiny 2, you'll most probably be blown away. All the other Tales games I played afterwards looked like crap in comparison.

As for the best storylines out there; I'd have to say I can't decide; there's so much awesome storylines that deserve to be praised...Final fantasy 7 of course, Shadow of the colossus, Legend of dragoon was nice too...I think I'd have to cast my vote for Xenosaga; one of the most long and complete game trilogy ever created up to now in game history, and even if some may criticise the awkward game mechanics, the overall plot and the components of the story are just pure genius; a game for cultivated people I dare say!

STARCRAFT! Incredible RTS game. Also Bioshock, the entire series. I like all the detail the games give. Finally, the Metroid Prime game series. Seems like it could happen in its time and has a lot of active elements that enter the game from cutscenes. I know we don't have to do this, but I think the worst game story lines are Super Smash Bros Brawl, it makes almost no sense, also NFS Undercover, which I liked but the cutscenes are like 20 minutes each in between every 3 races, so u end up skipping them and then not understanding the story, worst storyline of all is probably the Shrek 2 gamecube, I only say that cuz my lil sis is playing that right now, and it is nothing like the movie, they took out half the scenes and replaced them with crap! There u go, both best and worst, even though we didnt have to give worst.

I'm a year older then you, just sayin . And yes I HAVE played both Tales of Destiny and Tales of Eternia (which was ALSO called Tales of Destiny 2 for some weird reason, but that's probably not the Destiny 2 you mean right? ). But I mentioned Vesperia mainly because it was the most recent Tales game I played and a personal favourite of mine (I just adore that games music). Although I still need to play the actual Destiny 2 so I'll be sure to check it out.

And speaking of Xenosaga, what about Xenogears(i.e the PS1 game)? Also very imaginative in the story department and completely changes it's way to story-telling at the half-way point (although that's probably the sign of a rushed game but it's unique and I think it works in the games favor).

It seems as though they tried to make a story far too complex for the budget they had for the game develpment, which is kind of sad. The second Cd was a rushed flow of texts cutting short and insipid in-game moments. I prefer Xenosaga over xenogears simply because it's complete in every aspect whereas xenogears lacked some evident polishing. Xenogears is still a terrific game, and I still enjoy playing it every now and then just to see the doctor's sword techniques - Jin was obviously based on that character.

I also got the feel that they introduced too many elements assuming we'd know them; which makes the storyline blurry and very confusing. In Xenosaga, you have an integrated dictionnary and the story's easier to follow; they should really make a remake of Xenogears with a team of people that would work on completing the second Cd properly.

That may be it, because I know north america had a release mistake and distributed the game under a wrong name. It's the one with Reid, Keele, Farah and Meredy.

so because of a conspiracy you don't like it? shallow

With the "evidence" given in the game, I agree.
However if they had hard evidence to support their stupid (but creative and fun) conspiracy then it should not be involved. In my opinion.

Yes, that's Xenogears biggest flaw. While I don't mind reading long text passages, the second Disc feels like they just let you read the script and then let you play the game for 5 minutes. Worst part is that after reading 30 minutes of text they put you in a boss fight with no saves so you BETTER beat that boss if you don't want to read for 30 minutes again.

But story-wise it really is an incredible game and I'd absolutely love a remake with a playable second disc. Heck, they even remade Lufia 2 so if Square just MIGHT be nice enough to actually do it(but I'm not holding my breath )

And on Xenosaga I must confess that I never played it for longer then an hour. But that's only really because I never got around to playing it more. And seeing that you like it even more then Xenogears I'm tempted to retry it.

Xenosaga's one hell of a videogame; the only hard thing is getting into it; it feels like slowly piercing the shell of such a dense and complete universe that it's the kind of game in which it's very hard to immerse oneself, but when you do! Phew!

Oh, and I'd like to add Phantom Brave to my list; that game has one of the most touching storyline I've ever seen, along with one of the most original mechanic for a tactic; Kudos NIS.
