The same reason they added NPC villages even though they have no use
NPC Villages can be good for homes. I settled right in an NPC village in the middle of desert, and I can say it's slightly an easier start. (If you find one early on.)

Dont use hamachi.
People can Hack into your computer. so unless you are in a server with your family then you should stop. If you are on several networks and they all have random people... you are at a great risk.
