Well, I was searching to see if this was already made, but the searches didn't show a thread with my idea so here it is. I am making this thread so we can have a typical tavern discussion thread for all things science! Basically, a thread for everything science! Ranging from discussions about laws and theories, scientific debate, breakthroughs, discussion about new scientific breakthroughs, certain scientists/philosophers, and all that good stuff!
So go out there and let out your inner science! ;P
To get us going somewhere I'll start: what do you think the future holds for technology? I think our knowledge will allow us to overcome the obstacles thrown at us in the future, I mean, we have discovered so much and have come so far!

My ant domination is far more likely than ant nukes. I advise you read my previous post. It may seem wierd at points but read it all.

there are about 1 million ants for every 1 person. if they had or brain power they would surly figue this out and the world would probably end up in the situation that Dragon described. But i think eventally when the ants run out of food and have to many wars the population will decrease massively. Then all of the amphibians, reptiles, and whatever small population of mammals that are left would rise up and develop a new ant diet. the ants would then need to go into hiding underground like they are now, and eventually devolutionize into their original r like species in order to surive.

I don't think they would leave enough land based life to recover. I think fish would have to reevolve legs.

no such thing as de-evolution. What you are talking about is evolution. All evolution does is optimize a species to it's environment. So if that means losing cognitive capabilities in favor of other abilities to better survive and reproduce, that's what would happen.

First, we have been talking about a bug dominate planet, not an Earthly one with everything on it.

Second, they won't run out of food, they will probably become cannibalistic...

Third like Mage said there is no de-evolution. If desired, your ants may evolve. But why would the evolve to give up our brain? Why, why why!?

Fourth if like you say they are all powerful menaces, like Dragon said I doubt there would be anything but ocean life to recover... They would have devoured land and land life like it was dessert ;O

Braind take up a large amount of the body's nutrition. If it became hard times, it would be an effective strategy to forfeit the mental capacity to maintain body mass.

I don't think they would evolve out of that brain capacity. With it, they will solve the problem, becoming cannibalistic or not.

Energy in living beings decreases in density with each level of the food chain. Pure cannibalism would lead to starvation.

Well then, that is ruled out. But with their human minds, they will do something else... Cannibalism at the start, and since they are underground now, eat the worms and etc. Perhaps even evolve in some regard to gain the nutrients in the soil.

I don't think they would have enough time to evolve. The plague would sweep across the land in a matter of years at the most!

I forgot why our ant are even underground... Nonsense, they are going to run our of food... Once they are super-sized, they can fish in the ocean.
Oh and they may not force themselves into hiding based on their actions towards one another... With our brains they should be able to realize the wrong, when they are on the verge of extinction/hiding.

But they are also driven by instict. Even we are instinct driven beings. They would feel huger, so they would keep eating instead of starving as a martyr.

And if they have some of our brain they would go into panics and frenzys like we do. Ex: Raids, famines, war ect...

Possibly. Would they retain any sense of hive mentality?

I think with our brain power the most hive mentallity they would have is that of a soilder's.
