Well, I was searching to see if this was already made, but the searches didn't show a thread with my idea so here it is. I am making this thread so we can have a typical tavern discussion thread for all things science! Basically, a thread for everything science! Ranging from discussions about laws and theories, scientific debate, breakthroughs, discussion about new scientific breakthroughs, certain scientists/philosophers, and all that good stuff!
So go out there and let out your inner science! ;P
To get us going somewhere I'll start: what do you think the future holds for technology? I think our knowledge will allow us to overcome the obstacles thrown at us in the future, I mean, we have discovered so much and have come so far!

Or have them tip and kill everyone.

Of course the ground of the floating city should not be one big plate, that would mean a huge risk in many ways. It should rather be made of a lot of linked single platforms, with a certain marge between. Preferably more an iceberg-like block instead of a platform to avoid tipping.

But what if an earthquake were to strike? Sure, it may not tip over but it would surely crumble to bits and pieces.

I mean ships pollute a lot, now imagine what a whole city would do..

Most of that is due to the fuel system it uses, we could build a much cleaner means of power.

Lightening, storms, rouge waves, Three Sisters, etc,

Many of this can be handled either through ways things are constructed and having early warning systems in place so the city could be moved out of the way of the disaster.

Or have them tip and kill everyone.

Given the sizes we are talking this is unlikely.

It's on the water. clearly it would have to be designed to handle a certain amount of bad weather.

Earthquakes and bad weather aren't the same thing. Water amplifies the power of earthquakes, making it even more devastating than on land. Besides, there are hundreds of ocean ridges moving across one another creating earthquakes. For every earthquake there is on land, there are 50 out in the ocean.

Yes, but the water masses that are moved by an underwater earthquake only have an impact on the shore where they form tsunamis. Out on the ocean they are simply slightly bigger waves, nothing fearsome really. Rogue waves, those are a real treat, and we should have a early warning system for those. I think I saw something like that on TV, though it is hard to locate them early enough.

The problems with early warning systems is that most of the things you're likely to encounter are fairly instentaneous. Rouge waves, Three Sisters, Lightening, all these things happen in a fairly short amount of time. Larger storm systems, distant earthquakes, etc, you could have time to move to a safer position.

I think there would be alot of problems. Like in the event of a problem with the power systems. In regular cities you can get resources and your usally able to leave in case of disaster. In sea you're just stranded.

Lightning isn't a problem at all, we deal with that now on ships.
Just how common place are the other two?

Obviously you would have back ups for those systems and round the clock teams maintaining them.

You could do it here as well.
Keep in mind what we would be making is basically just an artificial island. The only difference is this island we could move if we detect a natural disaster coming at it.

In fact here's one being built. We would just need to go larger scale.

Artificial Floating Island 'Viva' on Han River in Seoul

Oh. For some reason I thought the city would be travling to other cities. But if it's going to stay in one place things would be fine. It could also be used for things besides housing people. It could make energy for a city, be another source of food, a shelter, and more. We should build more.

It should be able to but mostly it would be best if it just sat off shore to a land based city.

Okay, but I still don't think it would be too safe to travel to places across large distances. Like the other side of the pacific.

Nice. Could we make one that would clean our oceans?

In what way? Other more specialized systems would likely be more useful.
