Well, I was searching to see if this was already made, but the searches didn't show a thread with my idea so here it is. I am making this thread so we can have a typical tavern discussion thread for all things science! Basically, a thread for everything science! Ranging from discussions about laws and theories, scientific debate, breakthroughs, discussion about new scientific breakthroughs, certain scientists/philosophers, and all that good stuff!
So go out there and let out your inner science! ;P
To get us going somewhere I'll start: what do you think the future holds for technology? I think our knowledge will allow us to overcome the obstacles thrown at us in the future, I mean, we have discovered so much and have come so far!

Yes. I mean we could always make new buildings and suspend them. Maybe have earthquake free zones for a city, and research when the earthquake will come so we can be prepared. Is that what you meant?

I don't think it would work well. The base of the building would likely have to be built specifically for this.

Well, down here we jack up buildings off of the ground to put in support legs so that they will not as readily be flooded. Granted, this is only done on small one or two story buildings, but a similar idea could be implemented.

Yes it would be useful for flood zones as well.

could these protect against floods. Or would a flood wash the houses away?

If it's being levitated above the area that will flood it won't wash away.

Another use for doing this could just be for plain aesthetic value. You have to admit a building floating in the air would be pretty cool looking.

Yeah. But how would you get in your house?

Different levels of 'floatibility'. When all is fine, your house doesn't float at all. Small earthquake, your house would float a little off the ground, say a foot or two. Big flood, and your house could float 10, 15, or even 20 feet off the ground.

Could attach stairs to it.

Hmmm.... What about a tornado or a hurricane? Would you float 20,000 feet off the ground?

Wouldn't need to. If it's being levitated by several of these superconductors in the correct placement it should be quite secure. Getting batted around by the wind would only be a problem if it was mounted to a single superconductor.

In that case the houses would be safe. As long as they don't get torn apart. Can we make them out of materials that will keep them safe. Would concreate do it.

Would concreate do it.

If it had other materials too. There could also be gold plating for corrosion resistance.

If i were to stick a lava lamp in the microwave, what would happen? :O maybe blow up in my face?

How about not putting anything non-microwavable in a microwave.

Sucks. :/

Concrete isn't actually that strong of a material. Many strucutes that use it have rebar (large, iron bars) inside the Concrete to help reinforce it. If Concrete is exposed to high or low temperatures, as in the Summer and Winter, it weathers, and begins to crack. Rebar can also rust while inside the Concrete, and this can cause internal damage as well.

Yes, but if you add some tinfoil and a few forks, you should be safe.

Here's a soon-to-be classic for yuh:

What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovible object?

What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovible object?

there are only 3 answers to this:

the unstoppable force keeps going, its unstoppable
the immovable object doesn't move, its immovable
or 3, a rather large explosion

I believe there was already a thread in which this topic was discussed.
Science isn't valid because god made us.

Let's not turn this into a discussion about religion, please.

Its a paradox. The Universe cannot allow paradoxes to happen. Therefore, we can assume one of two things:

1) Unstoppable Forces and Immovible Objects do not exist.
2) If they did exist, they would never meet because that would be a paradox. (see above)

I'm banking on number 2.

Let's not turn this into a discussion about religion, please.

Let's not feed the troll, please.

On this page of You're Banned (a forum game), acmed claimed that cockroaches are immune to nuclear weapons. What I'm wondering is: Are cockroaches really immune to nuclear weapons? If so, why?
