Since we have a LOT of duplicate threads on Armatars, I'm creating this sticky post where users can discuss ideas about armatars.
We've stated several times that Dan is in charge of armatars at the moment, and that if you want new armatars to go let him know. We have several new ideas for armatars on AG3 that we'll discuss in this thread as we work on it.
For starters, we ARE going to allow custom armatars at some point. I'm not sure if it'll be there when AG3 launches, but it's a priority. We'll have strict requirements, probably something like being a member for more than 6 months, and have a certain number of points/achievements or a reputation level of a certain rank or something. The specifics are still being worked out. One idea is that at one level (points/achievements/reputation), you could upload an armatar that only you could use. At another level, you could unlock it for your friends to use. At another level, your followers, and at the highest level, make it available for anyone on the site. We've also discussed the idea of letting our most artistic users create entire *sets* of armatars for the site.
In AG3, all users will have a unique URL for their armatar, which they can use on other sites if they choose. We'll have a link on your dashboard that will show you what the URL is or how to download a high-quality version of the image.
All armatar uploads will be heavily scrutinized by human eyes before they go live on the site. Users who abuse the system by uploading an image against our Terms and Conditions and other rules and guidelines about images will be permanently banned from the site.
Anyhow, if you have other ideas, questions, suggestions, please place them here. If you see other users asking about AG3 armatars, please direct them back to this forum thread.
What if we could keep the armatars we have now, because I like some of them. Will all the armatars we have not unlocked now be avalible in AG3 to use since there will be no AP?
How are we going to unlock new Armatars if the AP system is going away in the forums. That's where I get most of my points, and I'm not too huge into the gaming end of the website.
To my knowledge, all of the armatars will be available on AG3, but we'll probably use the Reputation system to unlock them. Some armatars will be game-specific so you'll only get them if you DO play the games.
Would there be a problem with uploading copyrighted characters, since they are not used for profit?
Administrator cormyn (posted Mar 31, '11 at 5:45pm)We need to stay away from copyrighted images, so that excludes Pokemon, Fallen Sky, celebrities, etc.
I think in other words any copyrighted images are not allowed, no matter there is a profit or not.
I have a question about allocation of Armatars' datas. If the coming AG3 allows users to use their own armatars, the storage of these images would definately cost a lot of server resources, which may affect the loading speed of AG webpages. This is the most I concern. Would the upload of people's home-made armatars negatively affects webing experience amoung AG3?
Aren't ALL images copyrighted to the person who uploads it to the net?
In terms of international common rules, "copyright" refers to a set of exclusive rights granted to the author or creator of an original work.
Therefore, if you are the one who created the image, you have the right to upload and use it. In fact copyright includes the rights to copy and distribute a work. Unauthorized individuals or organizations are not permitted to upload any related image to the internet.
I think that that you should be able to buy things for your armatar
Dan has said he doesn't want to deal with any sort of "virtual currency", or treat AP/etc as currency to buy things on the site.
It could be awesome to have some armatars for your own.
Yes, we've already stated that custom armatars will be allowed at some point.
Would there be a problem with uploading copyrighted characters, since they are not used for profit?
Yes, there would be a problem. All armatar uploads must conform to our existing Terms and Conditions, as well as several other rules we'll have to put in place. We will not allow images with any sort of copyright, celebrity face, etc. Even though *you* are not using it for profit, being on a site with advertising makes it appear that *we* (as a company) are using it to make money.
Thanks to spjohn for clarifying other copyright points.
Would the upload of people's home-made armatars negatively affects webing experience amoung AG3?
No, because you will upload the image to our servers, and we use a "Content Delivery Network" (CDN) which can "cache" images to serve them around the world. There should be no noticeable difference in load times.
