Ive heard game playing can be related to atheism, because it contains such violence and unrealistic situations that it can make a person stray from gods path. I am a devout christian, and i wanted to know if that is a popular belief, or simply a rumor that has spread around.

Please tell me you're trolling. You think violence leads to atheism? Do you have any idea of how much violence there is in the Bible?

Er, uh, what does this have to do with "straying from god's path"?

Also remember correlation=/= causation, whether or not more gamer are atheists than those who do not play the two are probably not directly related.

....HAHAHHAHAHAHHA

It is true that the internet has been spreading atheism, but that is because logic and reasoning prevail in this world of pixels. Violence and unrealistic situations? Read the OT, that is a perfect description of it, and most of the NT as well.

I realize there was violence in the bible. The violence in games are scarcely related to God or Jesus. They depict violence in a gratifying way. And, playing games too often can take away too much time where you could be praying or spreading gods word. Some people become obsessed with games, practically worshiping them. Eventually, they may lose their connection with God, because they have become so absorbed in gaming. My point is, it is a sin to worship something other than god. It is called 'Idolizing'. God is priority. But restating my first question, do you think that game playing can lead to atheism, keeping in mind the things i have stated above? Im simply asking for a second opinion, not trolling or fishing or whatever else you my call it.

Well if you never had a connection with "God" then you can't lose it.

My point is, it is a sin to worship something other than god.

Why? At least I know that video games exist...

But restating my first question, do you think that game playing can lead to atheism, keeping in mind the things i have stated above?

No, I don't see any reason why video games should cause people to become atheists.

I'm sorry that sentence had very poor grammar so I may be misintrepeted it, but did you just claim more atheists play video games than people who believe in a religion?

How does that make it better?

They depict violence in a gratifying way.

Since the passion is a lot better:

...BAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA. Since that is what kids do in their spare time.

Some people become obsessed with games, practically worshiping them.

But not worshiping them, so why would your sinning god want them gone?

My point is, it is a sin to worship something other than god. It is called 'Idolizing'.

And? If your god is supposedly perfect and sinless. Jealously is a sin. So technically your god shouldn't be jealous.

But restating my first question, do you think that game playing can lead to atheism, keeping in mind the things i have stated above?

No. Not at all.

This is like saying juggling leads to atheism. I mean, just look at Adam Savage or Penn Jellet! It takes up your time and keeps you from sacrificing to Zeus. Some people get obsessed with it, practically worshiping it. They might start sacrificing to it, keeping some away from Zeus!

Im simply asking for a second opinion, not trolling or fishing or whatever else you my call it.

No. Where did you come up with this anyway? Smoking pot in Church again?

GLaDUS isn't even angry, it forgives you. And it came back from the dead. So go worship it instead. It will give you cake!

Grimml, its not about knowing that something exists, its about having faith in something bigger than yourself. Games may exist, and are a tangible thing, but just because God isnt tangible himself doesnt mean that he isnt real. There are so many things that cannot simply be explained by science, and God is one of them. Absence of evidence does not equate to evidence of absence.

We aren't trolling, firstly.

Secondly, I don't see how violence and atheism are related. It doesn't really make much sense to me.

So it isn't about science, it is about fantasy. It is BS.

Games may exist, and are a tangible thing, but just because God isnt tangible himself doesnt mean that he isnt real.

In a simple since, it pretty much does mean he isn't real.

There are so many things that cannot simply be explained by science,

No, their aren't.

Absence of evidence does not equate to evidence of absence

Maybe not, but the burden of proof is on your shoulders.

Alright Alexis, being a Christian myself and being a gamer for the past 2 decades I can assure you that it in no way leads to atheism. Yes there was a lot of violence in the Bible and God never condoned war as long as it was just. The point being made though is thought of mind. The world is extremely secular, and it will continue to be so. Almost every type of media is going to have influences of the world you have to learn that. Just because they're there you don't have to be influenced by them. Playing Black Ops I know that it's simply a virtual world, and by killing a person online isn't going to lead to me going and thinking God isn't real just because I shot a pixelated version of a man. You shouldn't worry about it if your will is strong.

@red I apologise for the grammar; my writing abilities fail me when I'm tired. What I said what that even if there is a higher percentage of atheists that play video games (no information to that regard has been posted) it is likely that the two factors (religious views and the playing of video games) are not directly related.

Hold on. Let me get this straight. You aren't upset that we're absorbed in violent games. You're upset that our gaming distracts us from God? Sorry, gurl, but I'm an atheist, and so are most of the debaters here. We don't go around spreading God's word in our spare time.

I can say for myself playing video games had nothing to do with becoming an atheist.

I am a devout christian, and i wanted to know if that is a popular belief, or simply a rumor that has spread around.

I would say it's just a rumor. I don't see how the factors you pointed out would get someone to disbelieve in a deity.

Honestly this is the most ridiculous, unfounded, asinine, BS story I've ever heard. In fact, numerous studies have shown that video games have a nearly identical impact to one's behavior as any other media, like books or TV. And in that vein, why don't you read a Bible? I'm sure you'll find just as, if not more, violent than just about any game on the market.
