God sends two bears to rip up 42 little children for making fun of Elisha's bald head. 2nd Kings 2:23 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some boys came out of the town and jeered at him. âGet out of here, baldy!â they said. âGet out of here, baldy!â 2:24 He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the LORD. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys. 2:25 And he went on to Mount Carmel and from there returned to Samaria.
You must hate your father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yourself, and carry a cross on your back to become a disciple. Luke 14:25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 14:26 âIf anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sistersâ"yes, even their own lifeâ"such a person cannot be my disciple. 14:27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. 14:28 âSuppose one of you wants to build a tower. Wonât you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 14:29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 14:30 saying, âThis person began to build and wasnât able to finish.â
Sell your clothes for a sword. Luke 22:35 Then Jesus asked them, âWhen I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?â
âNothing,â they answered.
22:36 He said to them, âBut now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you donât have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 22:37 It is written: âAnd he was numbered with the transgressorsâ[a]; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.â 22:38 The disciples said, âSee, Lord, here are two swords.â
âThatâs enough!â he replied.
Beat your children Proverbs 23:13 Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish them with the rod, they will not die. 23:14 Punish them with the rod and save them from death.
Moses's Vengence Numbers 31:1 The LORD said to Moses, 31:2 âTake vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.â 31:15 âHave you allowed all the women to live?â he asked them. 31:16 âThey were the ones who followed Balaamâs advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the LORD in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the LORDâs people. 31:17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.
God & Slavery Leviticus 25:40 They are to be treated as hired workers or temporary residents among you; they are to work for you until the Year of Jubilee. 25:41 Then they and their children are to be released, and they will go back to their own clans and to the property of their ancestors. 25:42 Because the Israelites are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt, they must not be sold as slaves. 25:43 Do not rule over them ruthlessly, but fear your God.
25:44 ââYour male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 25:45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 25:46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.
Old Testament Counts Matthew 5:17 âDo not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 5:18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 5:19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Should you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall work six years, and in the seventh, he shall go out to freedom without charge.
25:44 Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 25:45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.
You can buy others and if they aren't Jewish you own their whole life for a one-time payment.
They didn't take slaves, people had to sell themselves. When you sold yourself, your family gets money and you get treated really nicely so everyone wins. Every 7th year you get the opportunity to go free. The immorality here seems to be nonexistent. You are actually helping these people in some ways.
No, slaves had no rights, were beaten and had other crueller punishments. And most female slaves were bought to be wives. I don't call that good treatment. And how can you go free every 7 years?
What about it? It is still supposed to be about jewish men sleeping with their women I'm pretty sure.
It meant if you are in a war kidnap every virgin you find and force her to marry you. And if you are going to say but everyone did it then remember that your religion is supposedly based on god as a moral standard and moral standards like god shouldn't change.
As i've already said Jews were required to treat their slaves extremely nicely.
Thou Shall Not Kill, then in 2point font "except when I tell you to"?
That commandment basically means don't kill Jews since God encouraged Joshua to invade loads of cities and kill all the males and babies and take all the virgins home and **** them and then force them to marry them.
You're kidding me right? This is so blatantly taken out of context to just add some more slander and mudslinging and hatred to this forum. You sir, are ridiculous.
So, context changes those awful, blood-thirsty and violent verses to verses who make sense, are not violent and show how god loves us all? I agree that context is important in many cases, but seriously context can't explain or justify everything. If you think context alone is the key there, then you are being ridiculous yourself. The thing with the metaphors is something I agree, the whole bible is one big metaphor and only deep reading and understanding might help here. Sadly many christians take it way too literally, and take many verses out of context themselves when it helps their purpose.
If people claim the Bible is not supposed to be taken literally, and what's in it is metaphors, why do they take the existence of God literally? How do you know God isn't a metaphor? Someone you're supposed to obey, whose laws you have to follow, who punishes your sins, and who watches you. Sounds a bit like God could be a metaphor for the government or something.
Well, this might sound dumb. But you can't base on a book on a metaphor, It's a little impossible. That's to assume you're comparing the book with another, but the book clearly outlines it can't really be compared with anything. A metaphor is a comparison between two things, but this book only helps us to define what god is/wants, not what he could be or portray to the human mind. The only way god could serve as a metaphor within the entire bible is if you assumed that he was a metaphor before reading and then pulled out a 'theme' from the book as if it were a novel and then associated your newfound theme with God. Kinda weird.
And HahiHah, I completely agree with you. It's not fair to take anything literally in the Bible to serve your own purposes when you can't live by even it's most clearly outlined ideals.
And I also agree with fantasy4life, I don't think it matters anymore since it's been retranslated sixteen million times. At least the quran is still unchanged...
I can answer for the whole, 'hating your family' thing; it's a comparison to how much you should love God; as in it should be so huge *stretches arms out* that it dwarfs your love for your family.
No, slaves had no rights, were beaten and had other crueller punishments. And most female slaves were bought to be wives. I don't call that good treatment. And how can you go free every 7 years?
Your proof that they were beaten and they have no rights? Most female slaves were not bought as wives because jews can only marry jews. If they bought Jewish slaves as wives they still need to get permission from their family to marry them and they probably still need to let them go. Also Jews who own Jewish slaves are forced to give them the option of leaving every 7th year not every 7 years.

They weren't taken as wives because jews can only marry jews, they were probably taken as slaves.
watch this. I don't call this good treatment.
In that video at 0:43
1. That doesn't necessarily apply to jews 2. It says that the slave will be avenged

Fine, a mistress, whatever you want to call her she was a slave kept and for all intents and purposes she was a wife. And in exodus it encourages slave beating since a slave is the property of its master and needs to learn discipline.
28Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and struck it and its king with the edge of the sword; he utterly destroyed every person in it; he left no one remaining. And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho. 29Then Joshua passed on from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, to Libnah, and fought against Libnah. 30The Lord gave it also and its king into the hand of Israel; and he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it; he left no one remaining in it; and he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho. 31Next Joshua passed on from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish, and laid siege to it, and assaulted it. 32The Lord gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he took it on the second day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it, as he had done to Libnah. 33Then King Horam of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua struck him and his people, leaving him no survivors.

Then they devoted to destruction by the edge of the sword all in the city, both men and women, young and old, oxen, sheep, and donkeys.
Josh(6:21)
23But the king of Ai was taken alive and brought to Joshua. 24When Israel had finished slaughtering all the inhabitants of Ai in the open wilderness where they pursued them, and when all of them to the very last had fallen by the edge of the sword, all Israel returned to Ai, and attacked it with the edge of the sword. 25The total of those who fell that day, both men and women, was twelve thousandâ"all the people of Ai. 26For Joshua did not draw back his hand, with which he stretched out the sword, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai. 27Only the livestock and the spoil of that city Israel took as their booty, according to the word of the Lord that he had issued to Joshua. 28So Joshua burned Ai, and made it forever a heap of ruins, as it is to this day.
Josh(8:23-27)

34From Lachish Joshua passed on with all Israel to Eglon; and they laid siege to it, and assaulted it; 35and they took it that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword; and every person in it he utterly destroyed that day, as he had done to Lachish. 36Then Joshua went up with all Israel from Eglon to Hebron; they assaulted it, 37and took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king and its towns, and every person in it; he left no one remaining, just as he had done to Eglon, and utterly destroyed it with every person in it. 38Then Joshua, with all Israel, turned back to Debir and assaulted it, 39and he took it with its king and all its towns; they struck them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed every person in it; he left no one remaining; just as he had done to Hebron, and, as he had done to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and its king.
Josh(10:28-39)
That is what is called genocide. I couldn't find the quote about taking to women as slaves, it was probably in another book.
Here's one a bit like that
"When you go out to war against your enemies and the LORD, your God, delivers them into your hand, so that you take captives, if you see a comely woman among the captives and become so enamored of her that you wish to have her as wife, you may take her home to your house. But before she may live there, she must shave her head and pare her nails and lay aside her captive's garb. After she has mourned her father and mother for a full month, you may have relations with her, and you shall be her husband and she shall be your wife. However, if later on you lose your liking for her, you shall give her her freedom, if she wishes it; but you shall not sell her or enslave her, since she was married to you under compulsion."
