This is just wrong. Why can't we talk about whatever we want?

What is it with Americans and our extreme homophobia?

how about we just settle on calling bigots and be done with it?

By that, it can still be applied to the theistphobe examples. I could easily call you a bigot for comments on religion, now I understand your homosexual and are in a special interest group, but discrimination falls within the bounds of the definition therefor it's the most common and specific term that should be used.

Maybe some people, but not many on here.

It's not bigoted, hatred, or any other deragatory thing to just ask someone why they believe in that faith and press them on it when they can't really answer.

We'll religious people can easily ask the same thing. Why don't you believe in a religion?

Because it is as a whole a groundless, preposterous, bigoted, and discriminatory establishment living quite inconveniently in the thirteenth century.

Why don't you believe in a religion?

For numerous reasons. Firstly, there are so many religions that all claim so many different things and claim the same sources of proof (Holy books, prophets, personal testimonies). Second, each "holy book" has a vast amount of contradictions. Third, religion sprung up in the past, but none in recent history, this leads me to conclude that religion comes from ignorance of how the world works and back then it was not known/uncommon knowledge. Lastly for now, in Christianity specifically, the idea of a "loving god" who does all these atrocious things, tells others to do so, is not a god I would want to follow even if I believed in him. He's like a guy who pushes you off a cliff, catches you, then puts a knife to your throat and makes you thank him.

I would assume that a 'true' religion would come about quite early in history.

Or perhaps doesn't even save you, when he isn't in the mood.

Possibly so, but the fact is, each religion has changed over time, which means there was at least something that needed changing along the way, and if it was a "true" religion, it should be right eternally, not based on the the current society's standards. The bible teaches that slavery is all right. However, now no Christian in their right mind belives that. What's that tell you?

One of them could be correct.

Second, each "holy book" has a vast amount of contradictions.

Many if not all of which can be solved (such as in various threads here)

Mormonism started in the 1800's. Scientology started around 1950. Those are pretty recent.

There are plenty of arguments both sides can make, and both sides will just keep arguing and arguing a futile fight.

It's not a matter of whether it can be solved or not. The problem is, if it's god's word, then why is it there in the first place?

One of them could be correct.

Yes, one "could" be correct, but how would you tell? They all claim the same basic things. (1. This is the only true faith. 2. Ours is correct because "Insert holy book here" tells us so. 3. It's correct because it's the word of god. 4. Our prophets are the only true prophets, all others are false. 5. Our miracles are the only miracles, all others are false)

Mormonism started in the 1800's. Scientology started around 1950. Those are pretty recent.

Mormonism is an offshoot of an already existing religion, and Scientology doesn't believe in a deiety, rather that we were placed here by another species (I think? I've never looked much into Scientology)

Wicca and Scientology both emerged in about the past 100 years.

A 'true' religion would have ever existed. There are thousands of people that, for chronological or geographical causes, had no chance to become Christian and to get in heaven.

About why I think there is no god (or the real god doesn't care about us, or he is just evil), I think one of the best points is our extreme tendency to idolatry and to invent fake religions. I can't see why a god like the christian god would create men this way.

Maybe we should take this discussion on why we think there is no God to the proper thread?

I understand that, and though I tend to debate over these subjects I never hold any one atheist accountable. Everyone believes how they want to believe and that is alright. BUT certain comments from certain members tend to be a lot more volatile than others, and the word hate is usually openely said.

Again I did not come to this thread to argue homosexuality because I don't have a stance on the issue itself, I just provided a much more sensible definition to use instead of homophobic.

How much does this change? I live in Tennessee, and they never talked about homosexuality in schools anyways. Not the teachers I mean.

this is so true. i mean it is an interesting thing to talk about but why would a teacher talk about it? i mean... they are just people who like the same gender. there is nothing you can really teach about that...
