Perhaps it has some sort of effect on the mind. Like when a hypochondriac thinks they have some illness and there body exhibits the signs but they are not really sick. Perhaps you think you are being healed and feel better but are not actually better. But, I don't think the church can physically heal you.
Looking at water, fire and such as elements is a bit esotheric what the human mind can do is incredible, for example I heard stories of people accidentally locked in meat refrigerators of ships and dieing during a voyage in there, showing all characteristics of freezing to death (some even wrote what they felt on the walls); only problem is, the refrigerator wasn't working either because of technical defect or because there was nothing to cool in there. Those people literally froze themselves to death because they thought they would. But this is neurological, I don't see how things like water and fire can have a direct impact on it. It's all about the brain.
It's pretty amazing what we can do with our minds. Shaolin monks can even change their body temperature by meditation:
During visits to remote monasteries in the 1980s, Benson and his team studied monks living in the Himalayan Mountains who could, by g Tum-mo meditation, raise the temperatures of their fingers and toes by as much as 17 degrees. It has yet to be determined how the monks are able to generate such heat.
The researchers also made measurements on practitioners of other forms of advanced meditation in Sikkim, India. They were astonished to find that these monks could lower their metabolism by 64 percent. "It was an astounding, breathtaking [no pun intended] result," Benson exclaims.
To put that decrease in perspective, metabolism, or oxygen consumption, drops only 10-15 percent in sleep and about 17 percent during simple meditation. Benson believes that such a capability could be useful for space travel. Travelers might use meditation to ease stress and oxygen consumption on long flights to other planets.
Well if it's something like a bruise, sore throat, or cut, no. But if it's a mental thing, then they might. To some, churches give a sense of peace and safety. That might help if you feel stressed about something. Otherwise, unless you're playing castlevania II, then no. The churches themselves don't help, it's what you do.

Iv read up on those studies. There is still so much we have to learn. What scares me the most is the minds ability to warp its own lil piece of reality i.e. hallucinations. Also has anyone heard of synthesesia (not sure if I spelt that right) where people smell colours and taste numbers, some people can even literally visualise mathematical tables to complete problems.
If we can do all this when things go funny in the brain, then yeah, churches can heal if you want them to. However my studio can heal me if I want it to. I will now start my worship of the great guitar in the corner, with its mighty morning wood it will cure me of feeling depressed and bestow me with great compassion and creativity.
No churches don't heal, because they do not have Tylenol spaying out of the walls. The one that heals in church is god because he has the power to perform miracles.
