I don't use pencils, but when I do, I use a Bic mechanical pencil.
I hate sharpening pencils. I always have. Every time I try to sharpen one of those old school pencils, I end up breaking the tip of the lead, and then I have to start all over again. With mechanical pencils, you don't have to worry about all that.

For me, it's not that bad, but I still prefer mechanical pencils.
Speaking of sharpening, the only time when I'll use HB pencils in when the teacher has one of those electrical sharpeners in the room. I love those babies.
I personally love mechanical pencils, especially the extra-thin ones; I have gotten .3s from Asia. I also write small and light, so I don't need to worry about breaking them.
Sharpening pencils generally annoys me also (usually I break them).
.5 looks more neat than .7 (I have pretty awful handwriting) but, the chance of it breaking (at least for me) is probably 2x as big as if I had been using a .7.
Mechanical pencils are more convenient because you don't have to sharpen them, which is wonderful. Also, the mech pencils make a more precise line which suits my drawing style.
