I was listening to the radio this morning and heard that this group of "hackivists" is going to take down facebook on November 5th. This date is exactly the same as when Guy Fawkes tried to blow up parliament (failed) and the "big day" in V for Vendetta (succeeded). They're doing this because Facebook is allegedly selling information to governments.

They had a link to this in the article you linked to. You did read it before starting this thread, yes?

Apparently, this is yet another case when some individuals invoked the name Anonymous without really speaking for the group.

Wow, I hadn't heard about that. You know, I wouldn't put it past them. Anonymous has some serious balls. However, I don't pretend to know anything about hacking or the difficulties one might encounter in taking on Facebook, so I have no idea if it's feasible or not.

Within the realm of my own social circles, I think Facebook's demise may actually be healthy. The sort of drama that arises through it is just nauseating, and I'm quite tired of it. However, there are people who rely on Facebook for networking that is important for sustaining their livelihood, and it is a site made use of by youth movements in the middle east. I'm not sure it's really as simple as destroying a social crutch. Although, there are other networking sites, so I'm sure everything would work out.

If this does happen, I'm sure Google+ will see a significant increase in user activity.

None, at all. It will be a PSN fiasco all over again, facebook will go down, the media will have a filed day, facebook will come back up, nothing will have changed.

These jerks are really starting to annoy me. Who the hell do they think they are?! What are they trying to prove, to achieve, all they do is piss people off, they need to get real jobs and real lives and stop messing with everyone else's.

Anonymous is a group that is based of a bunch of hackers that just work towards a generalized and mutually agreed upon goal. the only membership requirements are that you remain anonymous. Otherwise you get kicked out.

The organization and its leaders hadn't agreed on this operation. It's just some individuals who are part of anonymous who do it on their own. Anonymous wont do this, just some random hackers who happen to be part of Anonymous.

I'm not saying this justifies it though, I still think they're all ******** and buzzkills, even if I did get inFAMOUS for free after the PSN fiasco.

The sheer amount of hypocrisy, telling us that they are destroying facebook for our own good and then criticizing facebook for supposedly doing the same thing.

Heres a thing anonymous, we have the right not to be bullied by whack jobs that want to tell us what to do because of their own moral agendas.

THEY are the authoritarian regimes whihch they ckaim to fight, but they are the most faceless and cowardly of them all, these people are hicoprices, idiots bullies and scum.

The very site that posted the article the OP linked to posted another article the very next day explaining that there had been a mistake and that the leadership of Anonymous claims it was never agreed on. It's either fake, or just some hacker who thinks invoking the name Anonymous will frighten Facebook.

The article suggests that it is being executed by members of Anonymous, even if it isn't backed by the whole group. If they have the correct members supporting this, they may still carry some legitimate weight. Although, judging by the fact that they've created a public invitation so early on for others to assist, I don't think it looks good for them.

I don't think Facebook is the slightest bit worried. They have the resources to easily get facebook back up and running in days if the hackers even succeed.

Doesn't change the fact that whoever wrote that is a raging hypocrite.

So did the PSN, just saying.

I'm not saying the attack isn't going to happen, because even a few hackers operating on their own can at least cause some harm, I'm just saying it would be very inaccurate to say the organization is planning to take down Facebook.
