The title. But I can't base a thread on just the title, because Mods and Admins can change it. OK, original title: Would the Earth be better without humans?

I say yes.

I would say that this is a question we can't answer.
There are simply to many things that play a role to make a concrete answer on this.

But still I would like to ask you this in what way would the world be better without humans

How are we defining better?

We've killed many animals and we've made the world a worse place with all environmental degradation. It's rare that animals make environmental degradation.

How are we defining better?

Better than how it is at the moment, with humans.

Again in what way? To a cockroach the world is very much better with humans, to that endangered animal because we ripped up it's habitat for farmland the world is worse.

Yeah, it's hard to actually see how the world is better and how, when you remove humans. Would there be a better ecological balance? Would there not be a safe haven for some animals we KNOW are endangered? (Obvious question)

I'm not one for hypothetical situations, and I'm content with our abilities mentally.

i think yes. humans always hurt more then helped the earth in the enviromental way. even though we do help it the damage is higher then the healing and i think the earth would be better without us XP unless we change of course

no, as a non sentient mass of rock I dont think it could care less if every living thing in the universe died painfully.

Although humans help destroy the world, they also do their part in helping it.
The would would lose a lot of function without us.

Maybe. I mean we do add a lot of pollution that won't go away for many years. Like styrofoam cups. they'll be around for a million years. Possibly more.

I have a great idea. I can take over and be king of the world and wipe out most of the population except people I care about and I can keep some cities like new york and paris. And then I can get whatever I want and we can just leave all the crap stuff behind and let everything rot and decay and reproduce and let nature do it's thing... although that could take hundreds of years. And everyone still alive could be happy or miserable, depending on who they are.

I have to agree with mage, it all depends for whom it's better or not. But looking at how nature developed in the banned zone of Tchernobyl, despite the radiation, I must say the world would be a prettier place without human civilization (well maybe except some stunning monuments and stuff). Pity I wouldn't be there either to see it..

Also, there would probably still be dodos if there were no humans. Don't forget the dodos! X)

I'm pretty sure dodo birds went extinct because of something natural, not humans. Not all animals go extinct because of us.

Of course humans aren't the only cause of extinction on the world; that would be pretentious to think. In the case of the dodos however, I know as a fact, it was directly, and more importantly indirectly the humans fault; at least the fault of the western sailors who imported domestic animals and rats on the island. While the humans hunted a few dodos and cut off the forest in which they lived, the imported animals did probably the biggest share in pillaging the dodo's nests and eating their eggs. To that comes that the dodo was slow.

I think it would destroy the earth. Just like if there were no bees the egelogical balance would be destroyed and species died.

No, it would not be better.

Humans are the only creatures around that we can definitively say can determine better or worse. The creatures would adapt, and in three generations wouldn't even know what humans are. As far as we know, we're the only creature that keeps complex history past a few generations.

I'd be willing to say we're the only creature on the Earth worth keeping.
