As many of you know, it will soon be ten years since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. On that day, America was hit by the largest attack on our own soil since Pearl Harbor in 1941. While New York and the rest of the nation focuses on the memorial being built at Ground Zero, I believe that something similar is in order here on AG. This thread is crafted as a memorial to the victims of that day and as a tribute to the heroes in the New York Fire Department, New York Police Department, the U.S. Military, the passengers of Flight 93, and all the people who tried to save others or rose as the first counterattack against the terrorists.

What went through your mind when you first heard the news? What did you do? If you have any directly relevant stories, like knowing someone who was on one of the hijacked planes or in the towers or the Pentagon, being there yourself when the attacks hit, helping with the cleanup, even being one of the people working on the memorial in New York City, anything like that, feel especially welcome to post it here. Even simple well-wishes to the families of the victims are welcome.

Be forewarned, this thread is not a place for editorializing about Muslims, ranting about conspiracy theories, launching barbs about the government then or now, making lame and sick attempts at humor, or being a fool in any such manner. This thread is made for remembering our fallen citizens, and commemorating the heroes of that day. BE RESPECTFUL.

Let's Roll.

there might be a possible link with cancer too.

What DOESN'T have a &quotossible link" to cancer, seriously. You might as well say, "Living has a possible link to death"

It's quite gross how most Americans partied when Osama died- those are no better then the terrorists.

No worse than when America celebrated the end of WW2.

You conquered a whole country after 9/11- hardly a show of mercy you fancy yourself to do.

The country we attacked was rife with terrorists on every level.

The US played a large part in turning the tide on Germany but they didn't do it singlehandedly - and, besides, do I need to remind you that your country didn't join in until the war was already well under way?

After WW1, England all but completely dismantled its military because it really believed that WW1 was the "War to End All Wars." Most of what they did have left was destroyed at Dunkirk. The Battle of Britain did slow the nazi invasion plans, but were it not for America joining the fight, the Germans would have found a way to invade, and England would have fallen like the rest of Europe. The fact that America did not enter the war until we were attacked demonstrates that we don't like to have war unless absolutely necessary.

You still talk about it like all of the things America has done and all of the people that have been killed in the name of America is completely justified.

No country is perfect. However, I am an American and I believe in American Exceptionalism, which means I believe that America is the best nation and system of government in the world today.

You might want to keep this in mind before you attack another well respected user due to the country he's from.

I did not attack him or his country of origin. I merely pointed out pertinent historical facts regarding his country.

Therefore internet threatening terrorists, bigging up America being liked and making digs at other countries should be very irrelevant.

1. Not a threat as much as a fact.
2. If America isn't liked, why do we have friends?
3. Not making digs. Pointing out historical facts.

Really, this has gone too far here. This is a memorial, not a free-for-all. This thread is looking like it's been hijacked in much the same manner as the airliners on September 11, and it's a shame. There are other threads for the comments you are starting to make, and the only reason I reply to these is to try to set this thread straight, i.e. back on track and on topic. Now, let's not have any more such arguments. It's kind of like painting graffiti on someone's grave marker. Please maintain a high standard here out of respect for the victims.

That is all. I showed an interest about this to you before you created it, but as far as i can see, it is you who firstly disrespected it.

Thank you for the avorne, i highly recommend people watching the documentaries as they have taken insight from a range of people affected by 9/11.

The country we attacked was rife with terrorists on every level.

I just want to say something about this. I think the country we're talking about is Afghanistan. Do you have any idea of how many people died at the bombing of Afghanistan? More then 15,000 people died. And these are conservative figures. More then 50 thousend tons of explosions were dropped on innocent civilians. Approximately 300,000 people live in Afghanistan. How many of them are terrorists? Max. 5% And 5% = 15.000 people. So max 15,000 are terrorist. 15,000 people died and there are max 15,000 terrorists. Strange.

2. If America isn't liked, why do we have friends

Why do you think many people on school are friends with the rich ones? Ever thought about that?

Sorry for the off-topic.

Greetings

I've been up since 8AM and I am very tired, so I will make this quick.

Partydevil, no empty insults and put downs. No exceptions.

CommanderPaladin and Avorne, this thread is about, obviously, the September 11 Tribute/Memorial that will take place soon--not what I'm seeing in pages 3 and 4.

To everyone else, you see anyone being off-topic or rude, you report it to me or any other mod, instead of being futile vigilantes and tackling it by yourself. I expect my work dealing with violators and spam, not breaking up sissy fights and reminding people to color inside the lines.

I'd like to apologise for contributing to the thread going off topic.

My friend just linked me to this.
I think it's great to see the numerous events taking place.

Will any of our AG americanos be attending any?

I think I might go to my synagogue and pay my respects.

It also depends on what it is you want to post.

I would like to post a transliteration of the Mourner's Kaddish. It is the Jewish prayer for mourning.

Approximately 300,000 people live in Afghanistan

hmmm make that "Approximately 28 million people live in Afghanistan"
and 5% is 1.4 million
i didn't check the terrorist ratio or whatever so that might be different aswell. especialy after being 10 year under fire of the usa. (i bet it spreads hate)

The thing that bothers me is why this memorial has taken so long to construct. It's been over 10 years since the Twin Towers collapsed.

Not only that, other things that have been stated also seem to bug me. I'm not American, nor am I fan of the country, but it wasn't just an attack on the political reputation of America. It killed people, lots of people who had nothing to do with any sort of crimes elsewhere.

Innocents died that day, and not just Americans. The world trade center, otherwise known as the Twin Towers, was the center of the international stock market. New York was an economic giant, and many people were involved with it. Not only did many people from many places die, it was a staggering blow to many stock holders and anyone involved with the stock industry.

The men who did it, by all official records was extremists who were citizens of Yemen under the organization of Al Qiada (pardon if I didn't properly spell it.) who was then leaded by Osama Bin Laden.

There was controversy over who carried out the attacks, but regardless of who did it the damage was clear. The real message to be learned from this is that not that anything and anyone is vulnerable, is that if we bind together in a form of re construction and trying to repair the damage peacefully, not go on a rampage for the men who did it like blind fools, then maybe whoever wants to prove those who did the action wrong, that America wasn't a total bigoted nation that slaughters people and ruthlessly attacks places without mercy, then maybe America would truly "win" the war on terrorism.

The key thing to remember I always found was not to have a bloodlust, a vengeful attitude. My friends lost relatives and friends of their own in that incident, but for most of us we didn't feel like going on some crusade, killing people who may or may not have been involved.

The thing I find that beats terrorists in general is bravery. The definition of a terrorist is someone who invokes fear and makes concessions or demands to meet their cause. If your brave, and show that you do not fear or have emotions stirred by them, then they have already lost.

Either way, I just hope things settle down and repair eventually.

Amen.

I just realized that I have not expressed my condolences to the victims of the attacks. I am very sad about what happened and I hope that they are resting in peace.

Below is the first and most common verse of the song "Taps." It is the traditional bugle call played by the military at lights out and flag ceremonies. It is also played frequently at funerals and memorials.

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.

It seems appropriate.

I was in korea, and 7 years old when it happened. I was up at 1:00 am with my sister and saw that a building in the U.S. had collapsed. I didn't really care that much. it's only today that I realize the gravity of what happened. someone instilled fear into us once again.
