Well, if America wants to play 'olice and bandit' around the world, they should inform their people about other countries more, after all, even though America isn't a democracy, I think the people should be able to agree with their countrys actions. If what dair5 says is true, and I'm eager to believe that, it just shows how untransparent the government and/or the news are.

dair5 i am a proud american but i must say that alot of americans are closed minded and care only about their paticular situation. I dont mean to speak for all of you but i can be very close minded sometimes as well as heavily opinionated toward other people and countries. Alot of people i know are that way as well. Not all the time but some of it. Again i dont mean to suggest what you do or think.

As a follow up there are programs like CNN and world news that allow people to get updated on events but its a choice to be ignorant about the world or not

I agree, we should be learning more about the world whether we're starting wars or not.

Well, yes many are close minded, but I was talking specificly about why they're close minded about the world. There are a lot of reasons of why they're close minded in other ways :P

It isn't that American's are close minded it's that in our society we arn't constanly updated on the news and events of other nations. We should be updated, but we arn't. If we followed other nations news more and learned about them in schools more then there wouldn't be a problem.

so you blame your society, government and media for the close mindedness of the people? that doesn't sound like a nice country to me. and beside we live in a age whit i-net now. there is no reason for ignorants anymore.

So then why are americans close minded? Are we just born that way?

My world veiws are, we're doing things that we know how to do and thats it. My veiws on America is that it's a dieing contry and hopefuly we can recover. My veiw on the rebels in the many countries is, if they believe their cause so much, why not let them fight.

i dunno, could be that or what you said befor. but then "It isn't that American's are close minded" isn't true compared to the rest of that post.

I try not to be close minded, but I gave up on alot of the news because alot of it is overexagurated crap, like the hurricaine Irene, I was watching the news but all they were doing was looking for the first casulty from the storm and not telling me how fast the winds are or if its even a hurracaine anymore and not just a tropical storm.

Then I'll explain. I don't like generalizations about anyone. Even if they are true. The part about americans being close minded was probably resentment.

generalizations is a way people communicate whit. it happens evry day. when we talked about the crisis is 2009 we talking about the banks for example. even tho not all banks. a generalization is a short for majority. people should understand that there are always lots of exceptions when a general term is used. it's due to natures diversity in the world

About anyone. Anyone as in people. When you generalize a people it presets a standard about them. So you already have an opinion of someone who you don't know yet. Then that person has to prove themselves something they're not just to overcome the bad generalizations people put for them. When people are judged I feel they should be judged individually, because everyone is different.

i'm sorry to say. but whit this being said. i can only wonder why a hating, close minded country want to be the police force of the world.

Resentment about the generalization. It's the same way I'd be upset if someone made a bad generalization about any culture. It's upsetting that people are judged before they are even known. And since every person is different they should be seen as different.

I'm sorry Partydevil, but those kinds of generalizations only prove both your close-mindedness and arrogance, because for you to judge an entire group of people without directly talking to them shows you have no desire to truly understand what's going on, and choose to imprint what you wish to see on them. Furthermore, by labeling us as Americans, and attempting to degrade us, you act as though you are better, which is arrogance on your part, not ours.

It is human nature to believe that others are less important and less understanding than you, whether you're American, Dutch, or any other nationality, and it is stupid to assume that those are merely the faults of one people.

As for 'olicing the world', at least somebody is doing it, because somebody has to.
