Aoutch it's hard to choose a fav bands. I'll say some so... Led Zep', Trivium, A7x, Maiden, Motorhead, Judas Priest, Lamb of God, Slipknot, Metallica. Ok ok this is a long list of favorite bands xD.

The list of recommendations I give to everyone who asks is - in alphabetical order - here:

Those are my favorites and the only ones I really consistently listen to, though I have listen to/know quite a few others

It's a competition for Metal Bands and provides a lot of discussion about everything that's Metal related...

I've like many kinds of metal, many are already listed by Alt since he introduced me.

Though lately I've favoured Metalcore, Asking Alexandria, Chidos, Sleeping With Sirens, etc. Of course it really isn't metal, it's just a variation of punk with metal, pop and some other stuff thrown in.

Some great bands: Dagoba, Slipknot, there is one more but i can't remember the name of it... If i remember i'll post again!

Sorry to break your bubble guys, but Slipknot in my opinion is not metal.

First of all, it needs to be understood that heaviness alone does not make a band Metal. People who believe this often claim that Nu-Metal is Metal because it is "heavy". However, what causes Nu-Metal to be heavy is its guitars, which are low-pitched and often distorted. It doesn't focus too much on melody. Also, Nu-Metal bands tend to have vocalists that "scream". This causes people to believe that it makes a band Metal. However, the use of harsh vocals alone also isn't enough to validate a band's acceptance into the Metal genre. Also, the vocals used in Nu-Metal is often "shouting", rather than growling. Shouting, of course, is commonly used in Hardcore Punk, rather than Metal.

In my opinion, Nu-Metal takes far more influences from genres outside of Metal than actual Metal. Nu-Metal takes influences from alternative Rock, hip-hop, Funk and even Grunge. As far as its Metal influences are concerned, it's questionable. They draw influences from Groove Metal, or "half-thrash", and Alternative Metal (also quite questionable as a valid Metal genre.)

Iowa might sound more metal, but overall I think they draw more influence on other kinds of music, such that they become something more akin to alternative. That's just IMO.
As far as Slipknot is concerned, I see little difference between them and the stereotypical Nu-Metal band. Thus, I don't believe Slipknot is Metal.

Metallica is an amazing metal band. I personally like A Day To Remember but it's more metalcore... :P
