You shout at him to put the knife down, and you see him put the knife in the book and shut the book completely. The knife appears to have vanished. The kid looks up at you again.
(Also, could you not react to something that hasn't happened yet, like phil putting the knife in the book? I'll allow it this time, and that might be one of your abilities later, but until then, could you not?)

He couldn't be adopted, the parents hadn't fixed their will to include their son, because they thought they wouldn't be dying yet. With no money, James became homeless, using whatever he found first. It happened to be a pirate costume.

As he's running, the man straightens and jumps over him! The homeless guy grabs something and whacks the man with the knife, and the man collapses on the ground.
