For a good game you need:
1. A good story
2. Good character
3. Nice landscape
(good graphics are nice to)

4.Smooth gameplay.
5.All bugs fixed (and those that aren't get fixed with patches/updates)

1. Original, unique plot, wrapped in a burrito of mystery, redemption, strife, and accomplishment.

2. Enjoyable game concept

3. A colorful cast with non-cliche backgrounds and personalities.

4. Engrossing music that fits the current setting of the area of the game.

Graphics are a miscellaneous condiment that require little mind and little bother. They are just sprinkles on ice cream that contribute to the appeal, but do not make it delicious.

Music is very important, like the songs in Oblivion reflect the whole world, and the songs in Fallout New Vegas just fit in there

if there is a good story then there is usually a good character. for me story is the most important thing. then comes the gameplay. after that comes the level of difficulty and how long it takes to finish the game and last comes graphic and music

A good game composes of good graphics, good storyline, many features, and connectivity.

It all depends on the type of game you are going to make.

i agree with all of that except for the graphics part. a game doesn't have to have good graphics to be good. graphics is more of a marketing technique. take Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, for example. graphics=so bad it's not even funny. but it has so many good qualities about it that overshadow the terrible graphics so much, that you don't even realize how bad the graphics are until you stop to think about it.

Either you are troll or you have extremely poor taste and should go back to grinding to your 200 level rebirth in maplestory.

I disagree aesthetics are 100 times more important than the details of the textures and the polygon count. If the whole concept for the game is poor it will reflect that no matter how shiny it is. Graphics vs Aesthetics video.

It doesn't matter how many features there are if getting to them is a pain in the rear end and they add no real value to the game. See Fable 3 for examples and most money grab DLC.

I'm not going to go into details, but there are some "essentials" that are somewhat passive to most people but makes a difference:
If it has fighting or attacks, make it feel powerful - this can usually be easily done by simply using strong audio sounds on the attacks, as well as animations of taking the blow if it is an NPC.
A sense of immersion - Depending on your type of game, insanely nice audio, story or interesting visuals can grapple someone into the game. Here's an example.

Link from youtube and whilst he does look like a wimp - believe me he isn't.

Give a powerful point of the game that'll stand out - is it your mobility? Your ability to adapt? Maybe you've a thirst for destruction?

Maybe it's not even that kind of game. Maybe you want to have an amazing story. (I just realized that the tune in this trailer is the same as The Chronicles of Rickroll trailer )

Perhaps you're looking for a more sophisticated game...

Maybe it's a little more medieval - I don't know why, but people seem to like that idea a lot as well.

The basics are simple but exceptionally hard to do. You get them right, and characteristics of your own game can come into play very nicely.

What about castlevenia? It's boring and has alot of backtracking, but get's high ratings.

not first the third castlevanias for the nes they actually put time into making those 2. and neither of them have any backtracking whatsoever and the third can have multiple endings.

Good graphics help but the main thing is just making it something that you actually enjoy playing. The game has to be balanced, but yet fun at the same time. You also have to have something that makes the player want to play it again and again, be it upgrades or whatever. For instance, Nazi Zombies was a simple concept yet it was insanely effective, because it is just so much fun to play and is a sort of break from the normal in COD. You have to think outside of the box, and do things that have never been done before. That is the exact reason why the COD series is slowly dying, because each new installment is practically just a copy of the previous one. Also, do not underestimate online AND offline Co-operative play, it is a feature that seems to be being phased out on games, but it is one of the most necessary features to be successful.

amazing graphics arent needed but they sure are a plus...good games need to have good characters, good character voices, good story line, good level design, good items (including weapons and or health items) and a looong story mode not something that can be beat in 2 hours and maybe a well put together online multiplayer and probably some cool unloackables like secret outfits for your characters or game artwork stuff like that
