I am a christian, i and i strongly belive in my lord jesus christ, and i also belive that if you belive in him and except him as your savior, u will go to heaven. and i also believe that he created the world, not the big bang, or that we came from stupid apes.
You said that mankind is commonly confused, correct? Well, you are simply confused by my idea and therefore misunderstand it. You are only human, after all, so are bound and were ultimately defeated by your own psychological constraints in attempting to understand my idea.
I just took words you said. . . And I knew what you said, I just used an example to tell the others the REAL definition of Atheism, because they all believe that science is linked to Atheism, which it's not.
Your definition is faulty. Shinto and Buddhist do not believe in A God, and they are not atheist. There are other religions besides xian you know...
Look up the definition of Atheism. I did, and that is word-for-word what my dictionary said. I believe they know what Atheism means more than anyone else.
They are atheist, but they are also their relgion too. For atheism is a class, merely a name to whome who don't believe in God.
that makes sense choazmachine. Atheism is a western concept, so it is hard to apply to eastern religions and spirituality. Mainly because many don't require a belief in a personal god.
www.answers.com atheist - 1. Disbelief in or denial of the existence of God or gods. 2. The doctrine that there is no God or gods.
www.thefreedictionary.com atheist - One who disbelieves or denies the existence of God or gods.
www.infidels.org atheist - Disbelief in, or denial of, the existence of a god.
www.thefreedictionary.com polytheist - one who believes in a plurality of gods
Shinto believe in multiple gods or spirits. So they do not fall into your definition of some one who doesn't believe in God. By definition of the word, a meaning not or opposite, and theist meaning a person who has religious faith. Only some one who has no faith or religion is an atheist.
I's a shame that Buddhism and similar religions are looked down upon becasue some peole view them as Athiest. Especially since Buddhism is one of the more peaceful religions out there.
Shinto is most definently polytheistic while Buddhism is atheist because they believe in a leader not a god.
Agreed. I personally don't view Buddhism as atheism, per se. Atheism doesn't just mean a-theo-ism, or the belief of a lack of gods, but a-theism, or a lack of a religion, if that makes sense.
I agree that whoever said Shintoism was atheist is wrong. It's just not monotheistic. Nowadays, "civilized" religions are monotheistic. Once upon a time they were polytheistic. Anyone else find it interesting how as a religion gets more modern, they have fewer gods?
Yeah, Pixie's right. As a Catholic I would have to say Buddhism would have to be my second choice. This is mostly because it is the exact opposite of Catholicism. Let me explain though. the point of life is to be happy. This world has much suffering. Now The genius of Christianity is in its paradox. By suffering for God and his children and doing good deeds is what truly make you happy. The more I look at people who make hard decisions I'm convinced of this. But the Genius in Buddhism is in the sorrowful wheel. Its basically that in order to have a happy life you have to separate yourself from the world. The less the world matters to you the less it hurts you. You can see the contrast in things such as paintings where Buddhists have healthy looking bodies but sleepy eyes and Catholic saints have withering bodies but eyes that are drawn as doors looking into truth. The difference for me is whether or not I believe in a personal God. ( I have arguments that God exists but maybe another time).
I have a Mac, on on the Mac the f4 button goes to your customizable menu. I for one, have the dictionary button on there. I typed up Atheism and that's what I got. For to judge under the circumstances you don't know my factors is distressing. Once I get to my Mac, I will get the definition. . . I swore I added it before.

What is so bad about being an Atheist? I don't look down upon them, I envy them. They respect one another while others whom I live around don't.
whoever said Shintoism was atheist is wrong.
No one said that, it was brought up with Buddhism.
The less the world matters to you the less it hurts you.
Everyone can seclude themselves from the world, but that doesn't mean they don't care for it. If the world you see today hurts you. . . Change.
Okay, this is about Christianity vs. Atheism. Before all I saw was Biology. Now I see other Religions. What happened?
Typical topic degeneration, chaozmachine. I agree, we should get back to discussion of Christianity and Atheism. Anyone who wants to continue discussion of Buddhism/Shintoism/etc can create a new topic.
To return to discussion of Christianity, I propose a new sub-topic of discussion: The historicity of Jesus Christ. I mean, seriously. Jesus was mentioned historically once outside of the Bible in the general timeframe of his "life", in the Testamentonium Flavium -- one PARAGRAPH! -- and nevereverever while he was supposed to be alive. Furthermore, the census of Herod's time was totally undocumented. Anyone else consider this to be a serious flaw in Christianity?

Exactly what I would say of most chemical dating methods...
My philosophy is that Jesus was a great man and definitely makes the top 5 greatest people (MLK, Gandhi, etc.) but is/was not divine. The main problem is that the entire Christian religion hinges on Jesus' divinity, which makes for a weak belief system. He was a wonderful person, the first philosopher who preached love over death and destruction, but the only source that spoke of his divinity was the Bible, which has been translated hundreds of times from dead language to dead language, so has no logical credibility as a good source for anything but a classic fiction and mythology collection.
Even christians aren't sure how divine he was. It was a pope a few centuries ago who eventually made a ruling.
Jesus' divinity is a controversial subject; too divine and it is impossible for him to have died on the cross (and the whole point of the STORY falls apart), not divine enough and he couldn't have resurected (again the STORY falls apert).
p.s. is there a thread anywhere on the best person of all time.
