Fire spells are WAY too much stronger than the others. I literally went through the entire game and 3 starred nearly every level first attempt (only missed the one with no damage ogres on level 5) without ever putting more than the mandatory 1 point in frost and plague. Fire spells simply do significantly more damage in a more reliable area (there seems to be a bug with the plague level 1 spell, it seems to not hit where the graphic is).
Once you unlock combustion it's GG.
At least this time you only have to max 1 upgrade instead of farming for hours like the last game to max out upgrades.
No, you really don't. I beat the 30 minute time with just fire spells and a few points in the ice tree - I didn't even have the 2nd ice spell until 15 minutes in when I leveled up. And only about 3/4 upgrades for most of the gold stuff (though maxed spells).
All you need is a maxed fire tree and good placement of spells. Wall of fire + combustion + 1 fireball pretty much clears ANY pack the game throws at you. You save the 3rd level fire spell for when you need a screen clear. That's about it.
On that run I made it to 40 minutes on just fire spells and the first 2 ice spells before I got bored and let them kill me.
It really doesn't matter what spell tree you use. Fire isn't overpowered, you just haven't upgraded the other trees enough to see that they are basically equally powerful. The second level unholy spell Gargoyle can clear the board when upgraded enough. The first level ice spell can wipe out many of the lower tier enemies in one shot, halve the health of stronger enemies, knock them backwards, and freeze them. The highest level Ice Spell Winter's freeze lasts for 10 seconds, clears the battlefield, and can freeze targets.
This isn´t about the quest but I just want to inform you, that the connection link between "quest chat" in game and this thread doesn´t work. It transfers you to the main page .
Well, this game is really easy once you are quite good upgraded. There´s only few quests to do so tomorrow is my day to achieve them :P
@Reton8 - I did reset the trees and try them out. Fire is by far the most useful.
The first level ice spell does less than half the damage of the first level fire spell at equivalent levels, and has the same cooldown. You only need 1 level in it for the knockback, which is the useful part - mainly to group more together for a Fireball or a Wall of Fire. Fire is significantly better.
The second level Gargoyle spell will only clear weak enemies. Wall of Fire can clear an entire pack of elementals/orcs/ogres when you have Combustion upgraded.
Winter's Freeze again, only clears the battlefield of weak enemies, you still have to kill everything that's frozen.
At the end of the day, especially in survival mode, slowing and freezing enemies simply isn't that useful, except on bosses. You still have to kill them, and in survival mode all you've accomplished is slightly prolonging the inevitable.
Basically meaning that the plague and ice trees are only really useful to buy time for more fire spells. Which really isn't particularly good balancing.
Just to prove it could be done, I reset the talent trees and did 30 minutes in survival using ONLY fire spells and the level 1 frost spell for the knockback.
Neither of the other trees could come close to doing that.

Fire spells may do more damage, but I did get to 2 hours and 9 minutes in survival using Winter's Freeze as basically my only third level spell (Used the other level three spells only on Zazek). Winter's Freeze does clear the battlefield for me for strong enemies and the Gargoyle almost always kills multiple enemies if not clears. How do I know this? I got to 2 hours and 9 minutes in survival.
Getting to 30 minutes in survival is much easier now do to the items that drop. In beta you didn't get those items that enhance the player. I could probably get to 30 minutes with just ice spells, or just unholy spells if I wanted. I just don't think fire spells are that overpowered. It's just that the game in general is a little easier than the first one.
Winter's Freeze is a must have. Kills most of the creeps, or significantly damages them such that your other spells can finish them off. And it also gets rid of that annoying spider.
For survival, I used the fire tree most of the time because they are really strong. The combination of fireball + firewall is priceless. The only spell in cold tree I used was the first one because of knockback which can save your life. From Unholy tree I used only the first one as well.
About the spider in survival - I ignored him for all the time because once you kill him another one appears in moment so spider = ignore

I try to go for them first, they can pack quite a punch if you're not careful enough! Even though the interval between spawning seems small, it would matter in the long run.
