Well people are not born greedy. And lets say some are. What will that change?
The policy in the SU was of you worked, you got your wage, if you didnt, then the hell with you. And they actually had promotions and different wages for jobs. Whats wrong with that?
Only problem with the SU was that it was total dictatorship.

The ONLY problem was that? You, sir, need to learn some history. Under their great Socialist system, there were more than 20 major famines in their 70+ years of existence. People who owned large private businesses were executed without trial under Lenin and Stalin. By WWII, only 5-10% of the churches in Russia sill survived the wave of religious persecution. The industrialization of Russia happened at the expense of millions of lives. The Soviet Union supported murderous and genocidal dictatorships all over the world.
The list could go on for pages, but I'm going to the bar with some friends, so peace out.
Only a person that wants to live in a future like you see in movies, like the ones in wich the goverment controls everything should support socialism. The American dream is making it big and living the life you want to lead, it's not "Hey, I could be a garbage man or a doctor, and either way, I get the same pay!" If you think socialized(my spelling)medicine is so great, you have to make apointments months in advance! I just don't know what else to say to you, because I already know you are seeing from a short-sighted veiwpoint, and don't want to back out now.
Even though i do not completely agree with the socialist doctrine Drace makes an interesting point. Despite the fact that the USSR was an extremely unpleasant place that doesnt erase the work of people like Fidel Castro. In the early days Cuba was envied by many and had one of the best health care systems in the world. This shows that in some circumstances socialism plus a relatively benine dictator is a good combination. It was only later when he became far less benine that things began to go wrong and therein lies the problem. Very often a country will never have a socialist revolution without a dictator at the helm. It is always inevitable that said dictator will eventually turn out bad, as is human nature when they are given too much power, so in theory socialism could work, but it cannot be run by the state or one figure, however it is very difficult to get a society to a socialist stage without one of these.
Well my friend, I stated my quotes on your communism page, and will simply ask this: How do you expect Socialism to start in America?
The US Government will slowly start adopting nationwide things, such as wellfare, healthcare, insurances, etc. Before you know it, retirement plans are nationalized through the government and socialism is right around the corner. Once enough people start believing that a uniformed, single-bodied government that is ORGANIZED and RESPONSIBLE is better than competition, socialism shouldn't be too far off.

We have all of those things in Britian, health service, benefits, state pensions etc. However we are nowhere near to beong a socialist society, we have a huge inequality of wealth and the gaps between the classes are huge. Despite the fact that state welfare is a step towards socialism it is by no means a certainty. Britains welfare system has been around since 1909 and we have yet to have a socialist revolution, in fact we are one of the more conservative European states in many aspects.
