Well, here's how I feel about it. Killing someone serves no further purpose if you can keep them locked away, but, some actions just deserve to be punished by death, pure and simple.
We need the death penalty otherwise there's nothing to prevent people from doing horrible crimes, other than jail.
What? I wouldn't murder anyway because I wouldn't murder anyone. Do you not kill people because you don't want to die yourself? Moreover do you know how awful and overcrowded jails are that's a good deterrent.
Most people say the death penalty is wrong until one of their loved ones is hurt and then they are all for it.
That's hope for revenge and quick closure. They want to equal the pain.
Here's Wiki on the topic of revenge: "Although revenge resembles some conceptions of justice, vengeance is usually depicted as more injurious and punitive as opposed to being harmonious and restorative. Revenge implies actions undertaken by an individual or narrowly defined group...whose goal is to force a wrongdoer to suffer the same or greater pain or loss than that which was originally inflicted to the victim(s)."
Two wrongs don't make a right. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.
some actions just deserve to be punished by death, pure and simple.
Which actions? Where should the line be drawn for 'too far, too much, or too many'?
Instead of killing them, what's wrong with putting them to work? The 13th Amendment supports this: "SECTION 1: Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. SECTION 2: Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation."
The problem I have with the death penalty is when innocents are wrongly convicted: they get killed and then evidence turns up a few years later that a key witness lied or the DNA/fingerprint match was botched.
I've already stated that the casual prison system isn't a good enough punishment either. If rehab had luxuries i don't think it's a good system for severe criminals.
No punishment is good. We shouldn't punish criminals. We need to do what we can to rehabilitate criminals and prevent crime. If a luxury rehab helps people, I'm all for it. Conversely, if prisons help no one, we should change the system.
But this logic, let's just let them go free on the grounds that hey, would doing anything at all help?
If prisons did not help, I would not advocate subjecting anyone to imprisonment.
some actions just deserve to be punished by death, pure and simple.
Why? How does it help? Why would anyone deserve to die for something he or she did?
Committing a crime doesn't make anyone less of a person. They have rights, and their past misdeeds are no excuse to subject them to whatever cruelty suits your fancy.

No but discipline must be created without it the system wouldn't work. Don't follow the rules get punished plain and simple. There doesn't have to be a "right" or a "wrong" as long as it doesn't involve killing I'm all up for it.

The system is a human construct and therefore could easily be flawed (and it is). Why punish, why not spend the effort that is needed to punish an individual on rehabilitation? Justice does nothing. It's a flawed concept that somehow believes causing harm to an individual who causes harm to another individual fixes something.

i completely agree with oynage and emperor. also, you dont know all people and not all people are like that. there are many things that participate to lead to this feeling. the way they died, their personality, the personality of the one who died and many other things. im sure there are many people who dont believe or need revenge
Moreover do you know how awful and overcrowded jails are that's a good deterrent.
Overcrowded jails are a massive issue, but it shouldn't mean everyone should die - it should mean petty criminals who are in for minor shoplifting shouldn't have stupid sentences.

The death penalty does NOT reduce the total number of murders in a country.
The problem I have with the death penalty is when innocents are wrongly convicted: they get killed and then evidence turns up a few years later that a key witness lied or the DNA/fingerprint match was botched.
That's also my main reason why I don't support the death penalty.
Most people say the death penalty is wrong until one of their loved ones is hurt and then they are all for it.
They want revenge, that's normal. But the government's actions shouldn't be led by emotions.

Prison serves two purposes: Rehab and punishment. We need the punishment to deter (can I use this word in this sense?) criminals which means to prevent crimes.
Instead of killing them, what's wrong with putting them to work?
But what would they do? People will be MORE angry because they would feel that prisoners are taking jobs away from people who need and deserve to work.

John Gordon, an Irish immigrant in Rhode Island, has been hung in 1845. He was the last inmate of Rhode Island to be hung. Now, more than 160 years after his death, jurists came to think that the process wasn't just, that he has been hung because of mere indications and there was an anti Irish catholics spirits at the time. Because of this he has been reprieved. A bit late...
But what would they do? People will be MORE angry because they would feel that prisoners are taking jobs away from people who need and deserve to work.
You don't need to make them work in the industry or such things. Engage them for civilian services, occupy them with small things, don't let them hang around in their cells all day long.
Even for extreme crimes - say a serial killer? Why should they be granted such privileges?
Because 1) they're humans still, 2) they might cause less problems if they are occupied anyhow, in the best case they even get less aggressive, and 3) if you are going to let them rot in their cells forever, maybe even without granting them any walk in the fresh air, you might as well kill them.
