The airways have much better traffic control than the ground. There are restricted airspaces, planes are detected by radar, etc... Planes may be thousands of feet above the ground, but they're extremely reliable, and planes go through plenty of safety tests before they're even let off the runway. They're so much safer than land vehicles
Statistically speaking, a car is much more dangerous than an airplane. The chances of a crash when driving are much higher than the chances of a crash happening while flying. Airplanes have strict safety regulations and the odds of a drunk pilot are much lower than that off a drunk driver.
