The topic says it all. I don't think that it's right. Especially last year when a lot of atheists complained about Christmas trees being called Christmas trees. How stupid is that?
I think his point was that it is futile to argue about these things, because one side will always say they are right, and the other will always say they are :P. his other point was that he thinks people should acknowledge that it is a Christian holiday, and that is fine with me, I even think it is stupid to call it a holiday tree, and I am atheist. I also think another part of the "holiday tree" thing has to do with other religions, and people think it is promoting Christianity. well, whatever. just so long as they don't interfere with making eggnog, I'm ok
Well here are my thoughts, does it really matter who celebrates Christmas, or how? Even if someone is not Christian, why not celebrate Christmas? For Christmas is the time of year where you can share on to others the greatness of being kind, giving back and being happy. Just because some people are Atheist doesn't make them greedy if they celebrate Christmas. It just means that they too, enjoy that high feeling of changing someones life forever. Maybe not even forever, maybe just for that particular moment while they laugh and rip open their presents, it still makes me happy when I make someone else happy. So just to wrap things up, it's not the religion or non-religion that makes someone greedy, it's themselves. What I mean by that is, you can have greedy Christian children that only celebrate Christmas for the gifts. Or Atheists that celebrate it to give back. So it is the individual person that makes them greedy. It is their own path; choice, to be that way.
doesnt santa give presents to all the little girls and boys in the world? im sure they arent all christians... its a sign santa doesnt care about religion.
Yeah, it goes the same for those of us who don't believe in Santa. I'm not gonna go around and make kids cry saying Santa doesn't exist. It's all personal opinion, it should stay that way!
Most of the time it isn't the atheists who care one way or the other about christmas, or christmas trees, it's people who profit from stirring up pro-christian sentiments by demonizing atheists (people like Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly have been doing this for years).
Also, there are families that are of are mixed sentiments; with some members being atheists and others being christian.
Additionally, there are other holidays at the end of December besides Christmas, some examples:
Advent Chanukah Las Posadas Winter Solstice Yule Boxing Day Kwanzaa Mummering
Finally, I can think of at least three secular reasons to celebrate at the end of December regardless of the fact some Christians decided to assign the 25th as their god's birthday:
Winter Solstice: The days stop growing shorter and start growing longer.
Holiday Season: The chance to get together with friends and family for any reason cannot be bad, no matter what the reason. The New Year: The opportunity to reflect on the year gone by, and look forward to a new year of promise.
Christmas originally started out as a pagan holiday celebrating the Winter Solstice, Christianity merely adopted this and added their religion to it. I see no problem in it.
Not all athiests complain about everything..Yes I agree that there are some athiests who complain about EVERYTHING besides whatever they believe in, which is the wrong approach to life.
Secondly a load more athiests are not in your face at all..Its just you notice the annoying ones cause they complain more.
And lastly I think anyone should be allowed to celebrate christmas..even if they've lost their faith they should still have the happiness that christmas brings...I mean christmas was brought about to bring people together...not exclude em.
