I saw yet another video of a group of protestors burning the American flag. The disgust me! Please tell me someone else out here agrees that it is wrong and should be illegal.

Violence is not the answer, but burning the American Flag is stupid.

Proponents of the anti-flag-burning seem to so often be like, "Oh! This Wonderful Country. How Dare you Step in its Face by Burning this piece of Fabric which is a Symbol of the People who Died for Our Country and This Shows You are not Patriotic. And Patriotism should be mandatory."

Correct me if they are not like this, and simultaneously present a logical argument PLEASE.

i'm not quiet sure what you're stating Einfach.

but i think the burning of the american flag is an obvious note to take up on. why would you need to do this in the first place? Well, i'm sure for other countries who despise the US would, or those who despise their own country. I find it disrespectful, though it's not so much of a crime as it is just freedom of speech. it's not the end of the world if a flag is burned, it's just showing their feelings about it. I wouldn't take it as such a delinquit thing to do, though it is bad. Like jaywalking, for example.

I mean the proponents of making it illegal all have the outlook that America is free and all, and then they say that they can infringe on people's freedom to protect freedom...do you see the irony?

Burning the US flag can be considered traitorous to the country in itself, not the politics, government, or people.

Government, politics and people are what make a country
The earth beneath your feet does not care about your flag.

This is what I believe most who disagree with burning the flag feel...

They care about the land beneath their feet called USA which they use this flag to represent. Because of this love for the land and the association with the flag, they get angry that someone is "burning" their country and insulting those that love their country.

I think that sums it up Im sure most would agree.
This is also pretty much what a patriot is, someone who loves their country.

Now its one thing to dislike someone burning a flag but another thing entirely to believe someone should be punished for it.

As has been said by others, if you make this illegal then what else should be illegal? Its already gotten out of hand i.e. drugs being illegal, money controls life and prisons are filling up with petty crimes, mostly because it pays rather well and looks statistically good to have high arrests, convictions and a thriving job industry to boot. They have to fill quotas, I hope people here realise this!

The idea that flag burning should be a crime is crazy. Should we start arresting people who drop litter? We could arrest anyone who shouts in public. We could arrest someone who stages an un-authorised protest outside a government building. Wait a sec... !!! this last one already happens here in the UK!!! Im not allowed to protest in front of the Scottish Parliament building without filling in a consent form!!!

Id rather be a traitor to the idea of a country than be a traitor to those I love. The earth beneath my feet and the people around me. This is what I love and I love what the earth and the people love, which is life.

Always look on the bright side of life *(whistling)*

No, but what the ideals on which the country was based upon.

This is what I believe most who disagree with burning the flag feel...

k.

What does a flag do other than to represent a nation? Burning the flag is like burning what the country is about. A flag can be considered symbolic to what the nation is about.

I think that sums it up Im sure most would agree.
This is also pretty much what a patriot is, someone who loves their country.

Patriotism has never been an ideal to me. Just because I was born here, doesn't mean I need to be loyal to the country I was born in. That's like being proud of something you were lucky enough to receive. If I win a the lottery, I shouldn't say it is a lot of hard work, but I finally did. It was complete luck.

Now its one thing to dislike someone burning a flag but another thing entirely to believe someone should be punished for it.

Burning the flag can be considered a treasonous act. Treason is a felony. If I blow up five hundred government buildings, then that can be considered treason. Treason is an act that betrays one's country. That's why burning the flag can be considered treason. It betrays one's country. It betrays the ideals of the country. It betrays the government of the country. It betrays the people of the country.

Burning the flag itself is not illegal, but treason is. You can be found innocent even though you clearly broke the law. You can burn the flag, be charged with treason, and be found innocent. It has happened before.

The idea that flag burning should be a crime is crazy. Should we start arresting people who drop litter? We could arrest anyone who shouts in public. We could arrest someone who stages an un-authorised protest outside a government building. Wait a sec... !!! this last one already happens here in the UK!!! Littering is illegal, but law enforcement just has more important things to do than to fine people who litter.

Id rather be a traitor to the idea of a country than be a traitor to those I love. The earth beneath my feet and the people around me. This is what I love and I love what the earth and the people love, which is life.

Okay. But just understand that burning a flag can be considered treason. Whether it ought not to be, it is not up to me. All I am saying, is that by definition of the law, treasonous acts include burning the flag. I don't know if burning the flag should be considered treason, but all I know is it is.

Quite what I was saying. It really has one purpose: Wave and represent the country.

I mean the proponents of making it illegal all have the outlook that America is free and all, and then they say that they can infringe on people's freedom to protect freedom...do you see the irony?

I do. It's more of a deal type statement the goverment's making. 'We'll give you freedom, but don't disrespect it, otherwise : consequences.' I guess you can say, threatening?

Burning the falg should not be illegal! freedom of speech is athe foundation of america, its hypocritical (not that that ever stopped america)here in britain i get very angry when people are arreseted for having racist views, i am by no means a racist, racism is disgusting and ignorant, the point i am trying to make is that saying something (or symbolising it by burning the flag) is completely different to actually acting on it

Burning the flag isn't illegal. Treason is illegal. Burning the flag can be considered treason. See what I am saying?

What you want to argue, is that burning the US flag should not be considered treason.

I get that flags represent everything that is good about a nation, but in the end it is just a flag. Burning it is a stupid way to show your disdain, and getting angry over it is stupid because it is just cloth.

Jail time? That's a complete joke. Maybe if you burn a flag in public then you should get some jail time. But burning a flag at home is obviously freedom of speech.

Why only the good things? If it was like that, there would be no need to burn it.
The flag is just a recognition symbol for a country, yet different people project different symbolism on the flag. Burning it is just a way to insult the country; they could as well say America stinks. Would they also have to go to jail for saying that?

good point, why should we have freedom of speech and freedom of the press if we dont have freedpom of actions (that are not harmful or threatening)
