On the news, in washington it is illegal to own a gun. I think they should be allowed I mean Murderers are going to be able to get them anyway they're always black markets for them but what about the citizens who can't pro tect them selves???
The second amendment bears us the right to bear arms. The president denying us the right to bear said arms (including guns), would be unconstitutional. The only way the constitution could be through congress, and at the current moment it seems that Obama has made healthcare his current priority.
Sorta reminds me of Animal Farm, when Napoleon does something (like sleeping in a bed), and all the other animals go to check out the 7 Commandments, and find that they have been change.
"All aniimals are created equal. But some animals are more equal than others"
In the March issue of "America's Freedom", the NRA-ILA magazine, check out page 56. Too much to list here but we the people ROCK!
This is my fave:..."Congress passed the Dept. of Defense Appropriations Act of 2010...the Obama Admin. sought to drop a longstanding rider that protects M1 carbines, M1 Garands and other valuable firearms from being needlessly destroyed. ...it was improved so it will also prohibit the destruction of safe, legal and serviceable small arms ammunition..."
See my comment above about hurricane- Katrina -guns because this won't happen again!
I'd say that noone should have a gun... I think that the USA is one of the countries with the most fire arm victims. (I'm not sure, so correct me if I'm wrong)
See the very next page,(57) of the above referenced article: "...a preliminary FBI report showing that murder and total violent crime decreased 10 percent and 4 percent, respectively, in the first half of 2009, compared o the same period in 2008." compared to gun sales: "In 2009, the number of privately owned firearms rose by more than 4 million, or between 1.5 and 2 percent....the FBI reported in December that during the first 11 months of 2009, the National Instant Criminal background Check System (NICS) handled more than 12 million transactions in new and used firearm sales, nearly 13 percent more than in 2008."
What all of this means is the FBI knows who I am, I'm in the data bank along all of the other gunowners who have "legally" gone through the process of purchasing side-arms, or, pistols. Because I have my CC, concealed carry permit, I have the permission to carry my weapon any where, except the restricted areas. Also, I had to attend a special class, be tested by written exam and shooting accuracy.
What I want to see happen, this year, is the right for CC permit holders to travel anywhere in the world, but especially across state lines within these 50 states.
Hazel, crimes will happen. They will always happen. With or without guns. Guns just make it cleaner and more civilized I think. And actually the right to bear arms never came as for hunting, self defense in separate parts. They passed the law all in one motion.
I'll admit France has a complete gun ban and only has 5-6 gun murders a year, but we're not France. There aren't places like Detroit (sorry Detroit, but your crime rate is through the roof), they don't have gang problems, and the people are generally nicer. Guns should be completely legal to anyone without a criminal record, whether it's for self-defense or hunting.
You know, the first thing Hitler did when he came to power was take away the guns of civilians and guarantee them protection. Well, we all know what happened next.

There's a pretty big disanalogy here: The U.S. isn't Nazi Germany and no one in our government could be remotely compared to Hitler. And I constantly hear the argument that by controlling guns, criminals would just have free reign. But I really think that with strict gun control, it will be that much harder for gangs/criminals to get their hands on guns and ammunition.
Yes Moeg, but they wouldn't need guns and ammo. They would rob other people while having no fear. Before gun powder was even thought of being made their were cults gangs and other such factions who murdered and stole without guns..
You should have to take some kind of intelligence exam to purchase a gun. Having a clean record isn't enough. There needs to be an age requirement of about 30 and you should also be required to own a home. If you don't own a home, you don't need a gun. Most people who own homes are less inclined to commit murders and crime due to the fact that they own something in the world. Enforcing these laws would probably bring crime down a notch.
If we didn't have guns, how would we shoot people?
If we don't have guns, how would we shoot people that have guns and want to shoot us?
A gun is the basic necessity for anyone who lives in a bad neighborhood and/or has to travel in one, and fears their safety is jeopardized by going outside or being inside during the night. Of course, general logic needs to be used when you have a gun. Bare truth, a gun is a perfect thing to scare away someone who's looking to prey on you.
But I really think that with strict gun control, it will be that much harder for gangs/criminals to get their hands on guns and ammunition.
I wish this were true. This would have to be implemented all around the world, and police would have to really crack down on any black market activities, as well as having no corruption. If people are looking to buy them here, guns will be smuggled into the US.

Just because someone understands arithmetic and basic ideas of science doesn't mean they have the common sense to know when to use and when not to use a gun.
If you don't own a home, you don't need a gun.
So if I lived in the apartment across the street from my house, I wouldn't have gotten robbed at knifepoint thrice in my neighborhood? Interesting.
on a lighter note...

You wouldn't be carrying the gun on you if you were robbed in your neighborhood even if you had a license. You don't have a carrying license and you would go to jail for using it outside of your home.

I didn't say an intelligence test that includes any of those things, how about an intelligence test that tests logic and other things that are related to decision making and more practical things in the brain? This would prevent some idiotic hoodlum from purchasing a gun because he has no criminal background when he could easily get to 18 without such a background and then purchase the gun when he was 18 just so he could get into crime.
