Because I'm tired of Christians saying that this is a Christian nation...

"Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity. "

-Thomas Jefferson

"As to Jesus of Nazareth, my Opinion of whom you particularly desire, I think the System of Morals and his Religion, as he left them to us, the best the world ever saw or is likely to see; but I apprehend it has received various corrupt changes, and I have, with most of the present Dissenters in England, some Doubts as to his divinity; tho' it is a question I do not dogmatize upon, having never studied it, and I think it needless to busy myself with it now, when I expect soon an Opportunity of knowing the Truth with less Trouble...."

-Benjamin Franklin

From the Treaty of Tripoli:

"Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."

"Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion"

-US Constitution, First Amendment

So please, stop saying the US is Christian.

"All men are created equal, and they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

Maybe they were talking about armorgames. The creator gave us the right to live on here with accounts, freely discuss topics, and pursue happiness by playing the games.

Not all of USA's population are Christian. Yet, some believe that it is the country with most religious people. They are obviously not thinking of other nations like India.

There is too many varieties of Christianity to make this a valid argument. You might as well say the US is a Religious Nation.
That may be true. You have to look at all varieties of Christianity in a big group.

I think you're all forgetting that our founding fathers were deists, some of them even spoke out *against* christianity.

You are thinking of Benjamin Franklin, referred to as the least religious of the founding fathers, although he too, spoke about Christianity and it's morals in his speeches.

Church and State started out as meaning, "The government should not inflict with your religion." But now it means, "Your religion should not inflict with the government.

"All men are created equal, and they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

There is no doubt they were talking about God, since most people in that time belong to the Christian religion. Don't try to switch meanings around to suit your own beliefs.

So to comment on this thread's name:

The United States was, is, and might always be, a Christian nation.

Or if you want to look at it in a different point of view, The U.S. is 77% Christian...

that's right.. we just did a study of him.. and he was not a very nice guy.

the majority of the founding fathers were christian, and I believe that America was a christian nation, but it is not now, and it will probably not change... sad, so sad...

I agree, and some of it is caused by the misunderstanding of church and state...

No they were not a form of Christianity, they are Christians, people can't be an "idea"

I think it's the sadest thing that ever happened America turnig away from their best freind and creator.

The rest of the world sees differently, because they actually think that America has become great because of separation of church and government.

Ya we need more christain poits in our country.

The majority of the people in the country are Christian 50.9% I believe, according to the 2008 census.

I think he meant convert two people to Christianity, we're obviously telling everyone on here. He's just saying that Christians should speak out more.

Nickelback i really dont understand atheism...how you dont fear god? where do you think you'll go when you die? you cant just be gone and be nothingness...something to think about...Anyways The nation was always about christianity. If we didnt have god, we couldnt had of won the revolutionary war. Think about it...a new small nation trying to be independant...against the power of the world, England. And dont tell me its because we were smarter, or had better war generals, because even washington prayed to god at despereate times...Example: His prayer at valley forge: "I consider it an indispensable duty to close this last solemn act of my official life by commending the interests of our dearest country to the protection of Almighty God and those who have the superintendence of them into His Holy keeping."
-- George Washington

"If my people...shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face...then shall I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."
-- II Chronicles 7:14

@Somers: You seem to have major misconceptions. Atheists don't fear God because they don't believe God exists. They have different thoughts about what happens after death. When you die, you have no consciousness. No cognitive registration of your existence. The USA was built on freedom, not Christianity. That quote from George Washington just shows that he was religious-not necessarily the whole country. USA does not=George Washington.
