Oh my goodness. Almost every dictators "election" was rigged, Hitler's was.

no not really, the people voted for him for chancellor because they were in a time of need, and Hitler was a visionary. He was well liked by the Germans he worked with. The only problem was his policies... >.<

But he forced himself into power when the current fuhrer at that time died.

Kim Jong-II. While most dictators do something good for their country, Kim did nothing good. No technological advancements, no rise in popularity, nothing. All he did was bring about famines, lower his country's reputation, human experimentation, etc.

If you had read your textbooks, you would know that Hitler and the Nazi were elected to power during the Weimar Republic era which also had many other ruling parties such as the Social Democrats. Hitler was named Chancellor by the President himself. Only when President Hidenburg was dead, did he declare himself President himself, taking the title Fuhrer. After that, it was downhill all the way.

But he did come into power democratically, even in the loosest sense of the word.

No he wasn't legitimately elected. Throughout his campaigns he would use his SA thugs to beat up and intimidate opponents. Before the Weimar cabinet was filled with Nazis he bribed numerous other politicians to push legislation through.

One of the main reasons he got to power in the first place was because of the Reichstag fire, and Hindenburg subsequently giving Hitler and the SA and SS the mandate to deal with the communists. In fact Hitler used the oppurtunity to kill many of his political opponents.

Legitimately elected indeed.

And most of the public loved Hitler and his policies before he started killing off Jews and showing what an evil man he was. That had to help some.

Hitler was not a "Dictator" he was elected, so the people wanted him there.
My personal worst:
Josef Stalin,
"Death solves all problems - no man, no problem.
"The only real power comes out of a long rifle."
"When we hang the capitalists they will sell us the rope we use."
What do you think of them...
He killed people just for being late for work. For retreating and for being a rich farmer (ect.)

A dictator doesn't have to always force his way in, he just needs to have absolute power.

The worst dictator of all time is Mao Zedong in my opinion. He killed 70 million people, way more than Stalin.

Not on purpose though, he just didn't know how to industrialize China successfully.

Kim Jong Il may be the worst LIVING dicator, but certainly not of all time.

I say the worst dicator EVER was King Leopold of Belgium.

He was the owner of the Congo Free State a colony in Africa, he was the sole-shareholder of a dummy-corporation that owned the colony.

Any land that a white man wasn't living on became his. When ubber and ivory was discovered the Congo became hell.

Every black person was given a quota of rubber they had to farm, if they did not meet the quota, they would have to pay the difference in severed hands.

Small amounts of rubber could be farmed and the rubber vine would live, but much more rubber could be harvested if the vine was severed, unfortunaetly the vine would die. This means the people had to go farther and farther each day to get the same amount of rubber, as some were cutting the vines in half. But the quota was so high, and was always being raised, so they had no time left in a day of collecting rubber to farm, and they starved.

The only way to escape was to become a member of the Force Publique, his army. They enforced the laws Leopold made. To keep up a steady supply of soldiers he took the children to camps where they would be raised as soldiers.

A Force Publique soldier could shorten his term by proving enough "kills" in severed right hands. Too cheat, they began to sever the hands of the living.

The Encyclopedia Brittanica estimates the population of the area was reduced from 30 million to 8 million.

It is unsure how many people he killed. Estiments to from 20m to 120m. Around 3/4ths of Russia's population at the time.
