Can we as Americans truly say, "Proud to be an American" after all the horrible things we've done?

I guess I'm proud, not so much, because I've heard from alot of non Americans and they think of us as selfish spoiled rich brats, and we care less about them...

I never said I was proud to be an American when Bush was president. But now that Obama is I am not afraid anymore.

So you're only proud to be an American when things are politically going your way? I'm opposed to almost everything Obama says and does, but guess what? I'm very proud to be an American.

Depends on how you view all the "terrible" things Americans have done. However never the less I am proud to call myself an American. Im proud because of what America stands for really. The basis of freedom and equality. We may not have everything that our forefathers had fought so hard for yet because of our inability to accept each other, but thats what America is based on, and thats why Im proud to call myself an American.

regardless of what political party is in power, I am still quite proud to say that I'm an American. The bad things we have done (very few) is nothing compared to what some of the other countries have done. The only thing that seriously needs to get back on tract in this country though is education. If the majority of this society keeps shrugging education off, then we will cease to be a superpower, and another country, like China will become the new one.

Nationalism and patriotism are just fascist concepts. If we were to think "I'm proud to be human" this world would be so much better. There would be no walls and barriers. Third world countries would be so much better off.

I would still say I was proud, but when Bush was in power I was embarrassed to say I was an American, especially when traveling abroad. It's not that it was an unfavorable political situation, it's because the guy that was supposed to be representative of our Nation, whom we voted for, was a moron and an embarrassment. Yes we are a great Nation, but as a great Nation we have many responsibilities. Bush wasted 8 years that could have been comprised of great progress at home and abroad. Under Bush America basically closed it's doors, sat home eating chips and watching the TV.

The 1st time i was ever proud to be an American, since bush is the only president i remember, was when Obama was elected. Otherwise i havent really been proud before then. But now im not as proud because I have a bias and like the president and dont want to say i dont like some of the stuff he has done.

Yes, I am proud to be American and I think are government is a very good one. It could be worse,we could be under a tyrant or we might not have the rights to vote. Just think,we haven't many wars on our country for a long time! As a citizen I feel proud to be American.

Anyway, yeah i'm proud to be an american. I don't think because we made some mistakes that we should all of a sudden be ashamed to be american. Also, if you think us americans are snooty and on a high horse take a look at the french they ain't much better

Being all snooty and British, I wouldn't consider English the official language of America. There are countless examples of the US butchering the English language, mispellings and the like. Why do you think there's a separate option for English US on Microsoft Word?
