Here is my opinion those who commit crimes will always commit crime if you where to ban the general public from possessing a gun the those who commit crimes will still have guns. Its not like a murder will be stopped if the victim doesn't have a weapon and lets face it a gun changed most of world from a feudalistic society to more democratic standards...those countries still under such a system is because the populous has no defense from the power group
violent criminals get their guns illegally, and we can't stop them, as much as we would like to think we can. Banning guns would only hurt law-abiding citizens, and make them easy prey for criminals.
Not if you can walk down the road, show them your licence (or whatever you Americans have) and buy a gun.
usually they do a background check, however in more "red" states, or republican states, in which they believe in total gun rights (yeah you can have a gun!, buy a cheeseburger and get a gun!, free gun with every purchase of a new car!, etc).
and in those states they dont often to background checks.
in the state of Virginia ( i think) it is legal to sell guns in the parking lots of gun conventions (which produce enormous sales of guns) and there is no background check.
And if they still brandish their knife what will you do? You will shoot, at which point you are no better than a murderer.
actually, it's completely self defense. if he comes at me with a knife, i have every right to shoot him if i acquired that gun legally and have proof on me that i have a right to carry a gun, then there's no problem! i'd practically get a pat on the back.
and honestly, i wouldn't shoot to kill. i'd probably shoot their shoulder, or somewhere in the vicinity of such. if i kill them, THEY DESERVE IT. and it's self defense.
With the intention of harming I find a different matter. No one will attack someone with a can opener, expecting much harm to be inflicted. With a gun, you are going to intentionally harm or even kill someone/something. I class intentional killing as murder.
i never said i intended to harm. my hopes in showing a knife-wielding robber a gun is that he'll leave. i know that he's most likely hungry, desperate, and tired, as most people who resort to that are.
it would be, however, in my UTMOST intention to harm them to an extent at which they are unable to attack, if they so choose to attack me with a knife.
