I'm creating this thread to discuss the international involvement in the so-called "crisis" in Haiti. Am I the only one who believes that Haiti should solve its own problems? Haiti contributes virtually nothing to the US economy or the economies of the other global superpowers. Why should we be trying to solve their problems when we have those of our own? I say that we let them deal with their own problems. Our involvement there isn't going to help them contribute to the world and it's only digging us deeper into the recession.
Not really. All help is focused on self interest really. It is still self interest whether you do it to satisfy your own care for others or if you help for a physical reward. But whats disgusting is to see people who have no emotional care for others.
yeah, thats idiots, but what about people like st. teresa(though shes not immediately relevant to haiti earthquake)
A lot of government-sanctioned aid has ulterior motives, but quite frankly I see foreign aid as an area where consequentialism is acceptable. Even if the organizations are corrupt, they still do good,
True
the individual donators are giving money to help, not to improve their national standing
Not nesseccarily the government checks how much the citizens and organizations donate that and they publicizing that in places, so individual donators may be trying to help this donation go up to show how much their country donated.(Even though this is kinda far fetched but still likely for every little bit that an individual donates still helps the overall for their countries donation).
If people want to use their extra cash to help save the lives of people from foreign countries who're dying, is there really anything really bad about that?
In my opion yes because they should give money to their country like for food shelters, animal shelter, orpanages ect...
people who help and expect a thank you, whether they get it or not,are idiots
No, because it's like if you give a beggar on the streets a $20 bill, I expect a thank you from him and if he doesn't give one I take it that he's unappreciative or didn't really need my money therefore I feel that my monies a waste, but if he says thank you I feel that he may have needed it and this way he is appreciative. For the Haiti's cause I don't expect them to write letters to me specificly but I expect them to write thank you to everyone that helped us in their newspapers because that way I feel it shows they needed it and their appreciative if they say thanks, and if they don't say thanks I'll of course feel they didn't need it and are unappreciative.
those who help others without expecting a thank you are
(Everything I say is just personal opion by the way) If the beggar openly shows how grateful he is I'll CONTINUE giving him money/food ONLY if he shows he's grateful.

Oh, so instead of helping dying people in a hell on earth, you want to help bags of flour, puppies and children who have food and shelter already.
Honestly, how could any of that be equal to help saving the life of a person?

Only fierce patriot millionaires who have an a**load of money to donate.

Finally you understand me.
Puppies in animal shelters are sent to the pound after a week if no one comes in to rescue them aka buy them or take them from the animal shelter to their house. And in the pound they are killed, and put in cages for a couple of days until they get killed. Don't you think that's hell on Earth for them?
And food shelters from what I hear from my teachers, and the news are like always short handed on food and asking for as much as possible, so even though they have some they don't really have enough like Haiti? People in Haiti have food and shelter just not good quality like puppies, the homeless and orphans correct?
Orphans from what I hear on the news, and my teachers have it pretty rough in orphanages, they share a room with like 20 other people, there food isn't exactly high quality, and finally there miserable most of the time from no parenting and lousy care.
So I think we should help these people and animals before Haiti, Africa and other places.
People in Haiti have food and shelter just not good quality like puppies, the homeless and orphans correct?
No, not correct. If people have a suitable amount of food, why is there a huge amount of looting taking place? Haiti has never had enough food for its population, and it's all the more worse now.
And if Haitians have shelter, why was the President (or whatever he's called) without shelter? Before the earthquake, Haitians lived in tiny shacks with over 20 others. The majority of these shacks, due to being poorly made, have been leveled by the earthquake.
There is also the factor of medical treatment. Because areas were so densely populated many have died and are injured. Once again, Haiti didn't have substantial medical resources before the earthquake.
Umm . . . the Haitians affected by the earthquake have no shelter. By definition, animal shelters provide shelter. And food. The Haitians affected by the earthquake do not. And they are dying. Orphans have ample food and shelter - they just need someone to adopt them.
The dying Haitians are in much more need of food, water and shelter than the animal shelters or the orphanages. And unlike in the shelters and orphanages, the Haitians are dying left and right.
Are you guys joking me? This crisis is not about economics its HUMANITARIAN AID.
No it's not. God, look. Hatii is very close to the united states. If a United states hating country where to invade and take over haiti, and we didn't supply help, guesse what? That country now has a nice little peice of land to shoot missles at us on. Thats what the goverment is thinking.
But as puppies, and orphans were use to demonstrate, why are we sending food to haiti, instead of the thousands of homeless, starving people right in our back yard. It really makes no sense when you tinhk about it.
haiti right now, is like a new born baby. Its new born, everyone wants to take care of it, and help it to grow. But eventually, no one will want to do it anymore, and it has to take care of its self.

It isn't 1962 anymore sure a piece of land close to the U.S. would be helpful for launching missiles but it would be too much off a waste to take control of Haiti then try and make the missile systems especially when it would be easier to launch them from your home and put in a bit more fuel in the tanks. I don't see much chance of Haiti being taken over as a missile base.

I'll give you this one
By definition, animal shelters provide shelter. And food. The Haitians affected by the earthquake do not. And they are dying
Only because after a week they'll send them to the pound and then kill them.
The dying Haitians are in much more need of food, water and shelter than the animal shelters or the orphanages
The animal shelters need the food equaly because maybe if they had enough they wouldn't kill them after a week. And I suppose your right about the orphanages none the less I think we should focus on our country till near perfection (because complete perfection will be impossible)then I agree whole heartedly we should help other countries.
Only because after a week they'll send them to the pound and then kill them.
So it all boils down to who you want to save: a puppy or a PERSON . . . .

No, Haiti needs food more badly than the shelters - animal shelters get plenty of support from people, and they're feeding semi-sentient animals for God's sakes, not people. It's extremely pathetic that you value the well-being of pets more than the well-being of humans just because the people are in a different country.
Also, there are a lot of problems with us trying to make our country perfect first. We are not completely self-sufficient in the USA - we need to extensively trade with other countries to keep our economy going, and if we never provide a cent of humanitarian aid, we'll be hated by the entire UN, kicked out and embargoed, and out country will wither and die. Also, if we somehow achieve this perfection through selfishness that you back up, than there will be a population explosion, which will lead to overpopulation, stagnation, and imperfection. If we never give aid, we'll lose all of our allies and all of our foreign assets and almost all of our economic might. You suggesting we use all of our money to better ourselves is idiotic and lacks thorough thought into possible consequences. We may give aid just to look better on the world stage, but like I said earlier, humanitarian aid is an area where consequentialism is acceptable. We may be selfishly helping people, but we're still helping people.

You may have a point...

Ok then what about food shelters for humans that are homeless, a fair amount of homeless people in the U.S.A die a year due to starvation, or dehyrdration
Those are high enough numbers not to ignore the millions of people that die in U.S.A a year of starvation should be taken care of before a country who was hardly known before their earthquake?
