Congratulations California, you have boycotted us due to the immigration law. In defense, we, Arizona, will threaten to cut the power to Los Angeles. Seriously
Since summer is coming up, LA is going to be stuck with no A/C and electricity and while our temperatures is going to skyrocket into the 100s, we always love surplus power
I really don't think we should look at this bill in isolation. It's all about politicking, and this bill is simply a means to an end. Arizona wanted the federal government to do something substantive about the illegal immigration problem, and they apparently haven't gotten an adequate response. I don't really know what kind of response they're looking for, though... It'll be interesting to see how all this unfolds. We should start seeing Supreme Court hearings about the constitutionality of this kind of legislation. At this point, Arizona officials will be handed a platform on which to launch their arguments for whatever it is they want. Arizona officials will just argue that it was the federal government's incapability of handling illegal immigration that forced this situation to happen. Maybe we'll get some fun arguments and rulings on states' rights. It should be a really exciting time for constitution law. Hehe, probably not. I just thought it would be funny to use "interesting" and "constitutional law" in the same sentence
Any sort of mitigation - like this bill - is a step in the right direction. As powerful as they are, the cartels are weaker than the government of the USA, and we have enough power to limit their activity. The bill will make it easier for police officers to do this. I don't see how that could possibly be negative.
Indeed. In this case, being paranoid is a good reason. If you don't have legal citizenship papers, you are considered an illegal alien. If some police officer stops you for looking like an immigrant, just show him your citizenship card and your back on the road. Not really that hard.
Who the hell carries around citizenship papers? What if you were born here? I sure as hell don't carry around citizenship papers? And what if you have no other type of ID?
Oh maybe if you don't have a driver's license or something then you should carry those papers...? hmm I'm not sure.
1. Violates 14th amendment, which has been readily discussed.
2. It changes the role of typical police officers in Arizona. They are not trained and qualified to make judgments like this. Purpose of police: Serve and Protect.
The way around this, in my opinion, is instead of fighting against Mexican immigration, go to Mexico and give options and instructions to those that do want to cross over and possibly establish a residence here. We already spend millions of dollars to keep them out, we can put that money to better use.
Also, lots of cities in Texas have already boycotted all Arizona products. In fact, I was in H.E.B. the other week (the popular and best grocery stores in Texas) and on the Arizona Iced Tea jugs there was a sign: "Not Made in Arizona"
and on the Arizona Iced Tea jugs there was a sign: "Not Made in Arizona"
LOL. I don't even know what to say to that....Those crazy Texans. And you would think Texas would support the bill, as it has it's own immigration problem...
Possum, Texas is not one cohesive unit. Austin, where I am from, is a very liberal city. They are all very much against the bill. Then, you have other parts of Texas which are very conservative. Which, as I read in the paper, it is the conservative that make the most ignorant statements I've seen to date.
Example: "I agree with the Arizona law! I'm tired of all these Mexicans that don't speak English"
It's bad and racial profiley, sure . . . but we're not the ones dealing with what the bill is combating, for the most part. Arizonans mostly approve of this bill
Most people cant understand until they've actually lived in a southern-bordered mexican state.
I don't see how this law is different from the fact that if you look suspicious a police officer can stop you and ask for an I.D., and of course only a legal U.S. I.D/legal immigration papers work.
Moe, "looking suspicious" is WAY to vague for police officers in my opinion. How would you go about deciding to confront someone about their legality in this country without profiling racially?
I know a lot of Mexican-Americans that do not speak English very well, work in landscaping, but are in fact legal residents.
Also, it seems that some of us Texas are forgetting about the Mexican-American war...
Wow... Arizona is just being racist and immature, do we seriously need Martin Luther King to straighten this out? Honestly, Arizona is just being immature. Okay... so California boycotted you, no I do not think that that is the way to solve the problem. But are you seriously going to leave thousands and thousands of people without power going into Summer? People need there fans, A.C's and things, especially California. Arizona needs to step back, calm down, be rational, and say, "Hmm, maybe I am being a little un-fair to the Mexicans. And I guess I wouldn't like it if I went without power in one of the hottest states in the country, in late Spring. Hmmm... maybe I was being an a$$ hole..."

I'm not even talking about that law. Police officers have been able to ask for I.D. from anyone they believe is acting suspicious for some time now, in the entire U.S..

This is different. That's acting suspicious. The Arizona law makes it so they can stop for just looking suspicious. And by suspicious, they mean Hispanic.
