[quote] what the hell are you going to be faithful to if you dont belive in anything[/quote I believe in a lot of things; love, science, myself, mankind, faith. Not believing in a god means not believing in a god you can still be faithful to other things.
NO IT ISN't! Mage, could you bring in one of your vidioes? Atheists DON'T BELIEVE in god. Simple as that. Its not a religion in any since of the word.
And you are so sure of this, almost religiously.... Now where have i seen people this adamant about what they beleive in before...... Hmmmmmm i just cant put my finger on it.
Freakenstein and samy's posts pretty much cover it.
GET SUM!
It's not so much that atheists believe that there is a god so much as they simply don't believe. Atheism is more of an ideology taken by itself when you throw in science it depends how you view it. If you look at it as it as it's intended, that is objective learning and knowledge, it isn't however it can be perverted to the point that the individual "worships" science.
And you are so sure of this, almost religiously.... Now where have i seen people this adamant about what they beleive in before...... Hmmmmmm i just cant put my finger on it.
Lets see what the dictionary describes religion as... Nope. There is no atheist code...
Now atheism. Nothing about it being a religion, witch is funny since the definitions for actual religions, such as Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism all say the word "religion"...
A religion is a belief. Atheists believe there is no God. What do you think?
You're equivocating on the word "belief". Basically what that means is that you're using the same word in two different ways, in order to develop an argument. Here's a classic example of this:
People say I should put money in a bank. But banks are near rivers, which are full of water. I don't want my money to get. Therefore I should not put my money in a bank. So here, I am equivocating on the word "bank" by using it to mean an actual bank in one sentence, while using it to mean like a bank of a river in another sentence. Yes, it's a silly example. But it shows exactly why this line of reasoning wouldn't work.
As for your example: A religion is a belief. Atheists believe there is no God. What do you think?
But I should rephrase it into a proper argument: 1) A religion is a belief. 2) Atheists believe there is no God. 3) Therefore, atheists do, in fact, subscribe to a religion.
In (1) you're using "belief" as more a system of belief. In (2) you're using belief as something propositional. "I believe that x". It should be clear from this that the argument doesn't work.
We don't have to defend atheism as non-religious so long as we can defeat the argument in the first place.
