Umm, make up your mind buddy. In any case, I agree with Alt. There comes a time in the life of a gifted musician where he cannot technically be parted out from the other equally skilled musicians. Dream Theater is of course a band of very skilled musicians, but as individuals they can't be qualified ''The best of all time'', at what they do... Besides, not knowing all the subtlety there is to music is part of the reason for this exagerated fanboyism. My friend, who's a wonder musician, is making studies in the fields of music and told me that most of the very skilled musicians in the world were dawdling more in the Jazz style than the rest.
if not best of all time mike is deffinatly the best in the last 20 years.
That makes more sense, because there haven't been a lot of superstar drummers since the 70s and 80s.
and honestly i cant name a single band in the last 50-65 years that has had more overall talent the dream theater, rush comes kinda close but not really. led zeppelin is also up there to but there time ended before it was supposed so its hard to say.
Technical talent maybe, musically is subjective but most would say not.

I'll do that for you... King Crimson, Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Captain Beyond, Uriah Heep, Atomic Rooster. Just to name a few. You obviously don't know anything about prog rock/metal besides Dream Theater and are a hopeless fanboy.

obvious troll is obvious :/ gtfo cause this ain't bout the other bands it's about that one
And what exactly about my psot was "trolling"? He said that he couldn't "name a single band in the last 50-65 years" that had as much talent as Dream Theater. So I listed bands from the last 50-65 years with, you guessed it, just as much talent (if not more) than Dream Theater.
king crimson and emerson lake and palmer i love there great. ya they are up there also but there not near the talent that i posted in video if you mind watching them
omg yes thomas haake could do it too. hes deffinatly up there. but ya have you seen thomas pridgen the ex drummer for the mars volta
Nope, heard him play. Actually i never listened to Mars Volta. *hides* But i'll definitively look him up. And for the people who just come here to say the OP is wrong, without even knowing who Portnoy is, you're a bunch of ignorant assholes.

Yes is also fantastic. Rick Wakeman is notably more impressive than the keyboardist for Dream Theater, and Steve Howe is technically at Petrucci's level but also musically extremely gifted.
I'd say it's pretty much beyond debate that Wakeman and Rudess are both some of the best ever. It depends mostly on opinion once you hit that point. They both have pretty amazing musicianship, and fantastic technical skill.

Quoted for truth. It's really pointless saying one amazing musician is better than another amazing musician. It's all personal preference once you reach a certain amount of... awesome musicianship. Delossantosj prefers Mike Portnoy's style, but I would take a Bill Bruford-style, more musically oriented solo over him any day (solo).
I've always loved Bruford's style of drumming. I really wish Yes' ABWH lineup (or the ABWH band itself) released more material, because Yes was definitely at its best then. Fragile and Close to the Edge are great examples.

agreed that was a sick ass video
bill brudford is SOOOOO CLEAN. the reason why i dont like him particularly is because he doesnt put alot of emotion into his playing which is one of the biggest things when being a drummer is to but your heart and soul into it
and why i like rudess so much is the talent and stuff hes gone throughh as a child. rudess had a scholership to julliard when he was 9..... i didnt even think that was possible
