what do you think about it like do you think if they do something bad they deserve a smack on the head or a "talking to" or something in between or even something different like timeout
even though I'm the OP I'm on a bit of a bias towards a smack because it teaches effectively IMO
My grandmother just talked to me like an adult from the get-go. She always took the time to explain everything out to me. Even when it came to religion. When I was old enough to understand, she sat me down with several encyclopedias (we didn't have internet back in those days!) and a few books from the library. All of the books explains different religions across the world. All she said, "Pocahontas, your beliefs are your beliefs, and you can choose whichever you like. Remember, to always use your mind."
I like what she teaches. One of the biggest things that I always do is talk to my son as much like an adult as I can (this can be hard at times) I remember a newspaper article that talked about the teletubbies. They said the producer got the tubbies to speak like his daughter and they never said anything that the daughter couldnt say... problem is... this only taught kids to say things like kids. When a child says poon... we say spoon. If we repeat the word they will repeat it too.
I think this extends to more than language and lends to the "monkey see, monkey do" idea.

My mom and dad didn't use baby talk with me. My mom tried it once though "Do you want your itle ba-ba?" I looked at her and replied "Why that would be an excellent idea." After that she decided to never use baby talk with me again.

don't tell me you never wanted to smack a child for being freaken annoying with the mother not doing anything about it
Bah, don't tell me you've never wanted to break some idiot's nose in school for being freaking annoying. But did you? No, of course not, because if you did you'd get expelled. So what's the difference? If anything, smacking a child for being annoying is worse than smacking a peer. It's teaching children that violence is an okay reaction to something that they don't like.
So what if a kid is a masochist?
If your kid's an MC, you need to keep your porno collection on a higher shelf. xP
And about the baby talk? I hate that. Hate it. It annoys me to no end and it always has.
