I'm sitting here watching the news and all of a sudden the people start talking about children sexting each other... apparently it has some people freaking out. Its a big enough issue that some states are trying to make laws about it. Sexting is defined by them as not only being words... but sending images of themselves. Thus they call it distribution of child pornography and possession of child pornography.
They've talked about jail time, classes (akin to driving school kinda classes...but w/ sexting >_> , fining the parents, whether or not to give the kid a criminal record.... does anyone have any further insight into the situation? does anyone have anything that they would like to say that either agrees or disagrees w/ the other people's suggestions? do you have any suggestions? ...or do you care?
This isn't a religious thread. Stop posting things that have little relevance to the topic.
I put that quote there expecting such talk from those that are highly-religious. I did not imply, by posting it, that this thread was religious. However, you'd be surprised what types of people attack pornographic and sexually-related issues--the same people that defend abstinence, having sex only to procreate, and attacking masturbation. Such forbidden activities! But the even the most-starved cub will have to break eventually, nyet?
Sure, there is shame and embarrassment that follows sexting, just like shame and embarrassment following a relationship. A difference? I suppose less nudity.
I believe that by sexting someone a picture of yourself nude you are thereby liable for any shame and embarrassment you receive. It's your own bloody fault that you sent your trailer trash boyfriend a picture of you ****. When the government gets involved in stuff like this, they are further limiting our freedoms.
I feel as though you have a generalized picture in your head about the type of people that do such things. Anyone can do this--it's not limited to a specific group of people.
I have no knowledge of this being true... It takes just a few people committing suicide over something for the ones that make the laws to base their positions off of... whether justified or not. They supposedly don't want this style problem happening again. Does this change anything?
A more-powerful argument than what's been posted here. If the government bans this issue on the basis of suicide and aggravated distribution, then they also have to ban bullying with the many aspects of it, essentially because the aggravated distributor is putting emotional pressure on the ex-lover.
The same argument applies, as traditional, general bullying can drive others to suicide. But banning sexting on this basis is just too hasty. They just need to be informed, by their parents, relatives, and friends, and save the government some money and hassle that they don't need and have plenty of.
I see your point and read the things but then there is the MUCH more blunt way of thinking is "if they make the law, they should inforce it, since they don't inforce it, why should it be a law?" no statistics just a matter of uncluttering the judicial system.
I would just like to say, holy ****. Every time I enter WEPR, it's an all-on-one against me. Every single ****ing time, my head is placed on the chopping block.
Don't act like a victim, because you're not one. It's polite argument. There is no chopping block and people are only against you in that they're on different sides of the argument.
Children, when exposed to pornography, have a higher tendency to think of sex as a basic funtion, and believe women to just be sex objects.
We should ban someone from being exposed to media that may influence their views on life negatively? Why? Discouragement yes, but banning something completely because it's perceived as distasteful or dirty by the majority of society and it may influence some people into holding like views is stupid.

Whoopsie. Did not see this before. Kudos to Alt.
*cough*
So should we also ban beauty contests, modeling, and various commercials with women showing skin, because people argue it is objectifying women? It strikes me as odd why some feminists out there want these things gone, because it was said woman's wish to do the activity. Now with the viewing aspect of this issue, I really don't believe the argument of how partaking in pornography will influence the viewer to believe women are sex objects. I believe instead that such views involve real-life influences and their own rationale, not a bunch of magazines and videos of naked women.

Now, I hope that at least someone will actually go with my viewpoint. I'm getting tired of arguing with 10 people at once.
Perhaps people disagree with you because your opinions don't make sense to them. It's not that anyone in particular is out to get you, you just have a very different way of seeing things. Not a bad thing, just means that you likely are going to run into everyone disagreeing with you.
How is this government imposed morality any different than laws against murder or theft? FOr that matter, how does it differ from the government imposed morals that guarantee the freedom you seem to value?
This is a really minor issue, I hate when people make a big deal out of a problem like this. I mean, pornographic images of or to a certain demographic is already illegal, so why wouldn't this be? And how many kids actually do that?

This and other images shouldn't be. What danger does it pose? The government's job is to protect the well-being of its citizens. What is being protected by regulating pornography and sexting? Are peoples' lives/health in danger? Is there thorough harm in the psyche of the masses if they look at pornography/participate in it?

Because those are not government imposed moralities, those are universally imposed moralities.
When the government forces people out of their homes and ruins their lives for being naive in a victimless crime, you get harmful government imposed morality.
I think the rule they are supporting w/ this is it is illegal for anyone to have/distribute explicit images that have underaged individuals as part of its content. One of the statements made by the news report was "Now, we have little girls who aren't even old enough to wear a bra that are taking pictures of themselves and sending them out to people." The people who decided on the laws decided that its (as best as I can imagine) taking advantage of someone who doesn't fully understand/comprehend the magnitude of their actions. I'm not sure I know too many little kids who keep good secrets... things inevitably get whispered to one ear and then the next and secrets get shown to one person and then the next until everyone has the secret. One of the concerns as I see it is that the image will inevitably end up in the hands of some pedophile who may or may not eventually approach the pictured person...but I can see the comments coming about that being highly unlikely or just a biased remark.
What they're saying is that if its illegal for one then it should be illegal for everyone to do it... regardless of age. They were discussing ways to go about it lightly (or lighter) so that the kids don't end up in jail or w/ a record. Its not like the kids are all going to jail for life... or even to jail at all for that matter.
I'm not sure if age of consent (16) applies to pornography... else all the random infomercials for Girls Gone Wild that you see at night would say "Finally 16" instead of 18. And I think its still considered statutory for a 16 year old to go at it w/ a 20+ year old person.
I don't do it, but I understood why people consider it child pornography. Also, sexting isn't just sending images of yourself to your friends, you also have phone sex with texts.
