Over my short time here at AG I've noticed that almost all threads dealing with religion end the same way: Does God exist? I've decided to create a thread dealing strictly with that debate. In saying/supporting either side be specific, and you may be as broad as including every religion to as specific as reading a sentence out of the bible. Atheism areas to consider: -Big Bang theory -Evolution -Dinosaurs -Aliens(?) Religion areas to consider -Anything that makes people believe in something religious.

You don't have to be an atheist to believe in this. It's just the most logical answers we have, and the ones with the most evidence to back it up.
Some people still stick to faith, some people don't believe in anything but the facts, some people mix the both.
No matter what you choose to believe in, there's no way to prove or disprove God's existence. Basically, this is likely to just be a "I think this because:" "I disagree because:", with the same arguments over and over again until it comes down to name calling and, eventually, a lock.
I agree with iMogwai. By the way, I'm not sure that it is possible to do a comparison between "religion in general" and atheism, which is a particular philosophy. The idea is nice, but there are too much religions to consider. Like, I could say Christianity accepts Big Bang theory, Evolution, Dinosaurs, but I couldn't say anything about other religions... I would have problems in picking up a sentence from the bible confirming that... umh, they don't talk about dinosaurs or big bang... I could look for some essay, but I'd have to post the whole essay.
im sorry for not directly contributing but is this thread really necessary.i mean your just adding gasoline to the fire. if you understand what im saying
last time i checked, athiesm is kind of a religion
The last time you checked you were wrong then - Atheism is not a religion at all. I really don't like this thread because there is no 'unified' Atheist set of beliefs, except the lack of belief in deities, so there's really nothing to have a Vs. argument about.
"religion in general" and atheism, which is a particular philosophy
Umm no. Atheism as in another thread is the lack of belief in Gods if I remember correctly. If anything, Atheism is less of a general philosophy than Religion.
Atheism is based on a single shared belief - Catholics have far more beliefs in common even if there are a few differences.
As said, I think it's in another thread that it's the lack of a belief - therefore the people who "follow" Atheism can be different in oh so many ways. Spirituality and Atheism is expressed partially through Pantheism, not something which believes in ghosts and such (as far as I can remember), but something that deals with human emotions and possibly more.
all atheism is based on a principle.
I can't exactly argue against this unless you tell me what that principle is. lol

Avorne I'm working on this from the bottom going upwards - did you just contradict yourself?
I meant that the only shared belief Atheists have is the lack of belief in deities - I did say that there isn't a 'set of beliefs' but it would be wrong of me to say that there isn't a shared belief at all.
Thats like saying "Theres no unified catholic beliefs so it doesnt exist." all atheism is based on a principle. Jeez.
Atheism only means a lack of belief in a deity. That's all it means. Buddhists don't believe in any deity, so they're atheistic too, yet would you say Atheism was a Buddhist's religion?
Religions involve a lot more than just the belief of a deity. That's why for Atheism to be considered a religion, it would have to mean so much more than just the lack of a deity.
And if what you were saying was true and Atheism was a religion, then all monotheistic religions would be one religion, and all polytheistic religions would be another. Just because their beliefs differ doesn't mean it's not the same, they have the same opinion regarding the amount of deities that are around.
Also... This thread does not say that Atheism is unified. It's just saying "Is there a God?" Non-believers argue on the atheism side whereas the believers argue on the religion side.
Non-believers argue on the atheism side whereas the believers argue on the religion side.
What do you mean by non-believer? Somebody who doesn't believe in God? Like other people already stated Buddhists are also Atheists. You can be an atheist because of many reasons. They don't all share the same belief (except for the lack of belief in God).
