I personally think zombies have been overused in many video games. Here is a list of a few games that use them. 1. Left For Dead (1 and 2) 2. Black Ops 3. Plants vs. Zombies 4. Wolfenstien (I dont remember which one but there is) 5. Doom (Very old game) 6. Resident Evil (all of them) 7. The House of the Dead 8. Dead Rising 9. Call of Duty World at War: Zombies 10. Dead Space (1 and 2) Those are just 10 of the hundreds made. What do you think of this? Should new enemies be made or should zombies be improved to the point they can add a greater challenge by wielding weapons instead of overrunning you?
I think what makes zombies so popular are the fact that they can only attack at close range, they're dumb, sometimes slow, and come in huge numbers. Basically, because zombie games usually consist of an endless slaughter of undead minions.
And you pretty much only listen FPS, you forget that they appear in pretty much every fantasy RPG out there.
Still, I think it's just fine. TBH, very few games are completely original nowadays.
Coding AI for zombies being significantly less complicated (than for more intelligent types of enemies) could also be one of the reasons why they are preferred.
Yes, zombies are overused, but, hey, those companies are always looking for ways to make money so they take an idea that the audience likes (Like zombies) and they squeeze the life out of it until no one can stand to hear the word "zombie" anymore.
zombies are simply awesome thats why theres so much zombie related stuff not to mention the horror of someone you knew come back from the dead to kill you and its awesome how something simple as a scratch or small bite could kill someone and make then walk around with the rest of the undead plus most zombie related stuff are also really gorey which attracts alot of attention because people like seeing zombies pull out peoples guts and rip of their arms
Lol it sounds like the overall liking of zombies is the fact that you get to watch blood-spatter and gore hit your screen and the walls of the game. What is with our society i must ask sometimes.

they arent overused they're just a good platform of things to kill, they're soldiers, but when are you going to get thousands of soldiers attacking you and just you and have it make sense? animals, but who wants to shoot a baby fawn :P so zombies, ugly and shootable, plus slow, staggering, they have a story to make up for why they wanna eat you.
um mabe cause zombies are sometimes the only reason why they make games fun for example 99% of my friends list on xbox 360 hates online on the game black ops but they only play it for zombies they make games fun for every reason!so yes zombies are over used but for great reasons!
