I ask this because a lot of these forums are of why people believe there is a God but, what about those out there who don't believe in a God? Why don't you think there is a God at all?

even if we do good things for the sake of others, we won't be able to get any benefits from it after we die, because we are, err, nothing.

So? If life is pointless what should we do, try to enjoy anyway or maybe we should waste our life repeating to ourselves that life isn't pointless until we are convinced?
And yes, atheists "believe" that, but not in the same way Christians believe in heaven. we believe in that because that's the most logical answer no matter if we like it or not. Christians believe in afterlife because they are afraid.

Christians believe in afterlife because they are afraid.

i think they think like that because it's there in their holy book(s). Books are the source of belief of some major religions, for example, the koran for muslims and bible for christians, Hindu also has its own books. so, to counter their believes, one has to study the books. they are also unexplainable things in the holy book such as the koran mentioning about big bang. that's what i heard, nevertheless.

so, now we need to live according to society?

We don't need to, but if we don't then society goes crazy and dies, and then we're back to instincts.
you mean, we need to do good things because society think so?

No, I said what we think as what is good is set by society, to a big part at least. We don't need to do good things, but we feel better when we do. And it helps society.
let me explain what actually an atheist believes.

This prhase alone already makes no sense.
let me explain what actually an atheist believes. he believes that in the end he will become nothing, leaving his life as a joke which is later forgotten.

No, atheists believe there is no god. End. Everyone has different beliefs concerning afterlife, a buddhist for example would think differently than me. And we are both atheists.

*giggle*. so, as you mentioned earlier, you are fine doing good things because society said so. or your mom said so. or you said so. just as long as god dont say so. maybe they are your 'god' without you realizing it.

Lawl^^ they are not my gods, but they did influence me, as was the case for everyone else. You seem to be too much focused on "what we think is good is god-told. So the ones who tell us what is good, are gods". This is stupid.
well, when we are at the brink of our death, let's say we are barely clinging at a rope at the roof of a 40-storey abandoned building, and the rope is jusst about to break. what will one think? "oh, god, please save me!". "i hope a miracle will happen and i will be saved!".

Maybe you would. I would not.
hypocrite, aren't we?

Yup.

Let me re-explain the meaning of life according to my nothingness... there is no absolute meaning in life, no objective goal. Everyone has it's own goals and achievements and meanings, and this is fine. What do we gain from it? A nice life. Does it help build up anything in the very end? Nope. Do I care? Nope. Do my children care when I leave them a good base for life? Sure they do.
We won't gain any eternal achievements for anything we do, but we might as well profit from being alive, since it's our only life. Catch my thought? It's egoistic fun, "sucking the marrow out of life", as would Mr. Keating say. If you can't live with it and need a "god-given" reason to your life, then go ahead; that's your problem. I'm perfectly fine with living.

Why do you hope god will save you, and not the thousands and thousands of good Christians that prayed for a miracle but still died?

Just had to think... anyway it does not make sense that christians pray for a miracle in the face of death. I mean, they're supposedly going to meet their maker, and if they are to die, it's because he supposedly decided so, or because it is part of his divine plans. So why are believing christians afraid of death?

so, that just answers my question 'if we feel better doing bad things, than am i guilty if i do it?' well , i will feel better and helps the 'bad society'. yeah..

let me explain what actually an atheist believes.

how does this not making any sense? from what i observe, atheists are often confused with their life, but guess what? they just ignore it. 'have you ever thought about death?' 'no, and i dont want to think about it'. your last statement in the second last paragraph proves this. you dont care about it. many think that they are coincidentally born, so just live this life than die. i think you are already thinking like i am, but you just ignore it, not wanting to delve any deeper.

Everyone has different beliefs concerning afterlife

this just further prove how confused you are. you do not believe in god and you think that everything that happened are science-related. yet, you believe in something mythical and not science-proven things such as the afterlife? you can believe the soul world but not god? now i am confused. can you tell me a little bit about this afterlife? i might learn something from you.

Lawl^^ they are not my gods, but they did influence me, as was the case for everyone else. You seem to be too much focused on "what we think is good is god-told. So the ones who tell us what is good, are gods". This is stupid.

haha, yes, it is a little bit stupid. i was just teasing you. still, the word 'god' can be interpreted into many definitions. some are making money their god, or the world, even some public figures such as magicians, 'sai baba' for example and even mangaka! (people who draw japanese cartoon). that is, until one finds his own god he can cling onto. you might not be surprised if i say that some are making laws of science as his god.

Maybe you would. I would not.

again, let's pray that you will never be in this situation.

If you can't live with it and need a "god-given" reason to your life, then go ahead; that's your problem. I'm perfectly fine with living.

then, may you achieve happiness in this life, sir.

Why do you hope god will save you, and not the thousands and thousands of good Christians that prayed for a miracle but still died?

your question is sorry to say, out of context. what i am trying to convey is at a life-threatening situation, deep inside, we hope that something will save us. it's our pure instinct. it's the moment where we put aside all the logics and math, and hope for miracle. i am trying to question the statement which says that 'i dont need miracle to live'. but to answer your question, well..i think that not necessarily our prayers will be replied right at the spot. some do. as prayer itself is a good thing, then it will be replied maybe later, or later, or we just get the benefit in the hereafter.

Huh?... bad society? Most criminals are loners and egoists, except for criminal organizations. You don't help anyone if you simply kill a random person. And yes, if you do something bad, you are guilty of doing it. It just depends whether you will be judged for it or not. That's decision of the society you are in.
how does this not making any sense?

Atheists do not believe in a god. There isn't anything else that all atheists believe in. Every single person, be it secular or esotherical, is an atheist if it doesn't believe in a god. That's why buddhism is an atheistic religion, and I bet they aren't confused with their life.
from what i observe, atheists are often confused with their life, but guess what? they just ignore it. 'have you ever thought about death?' 'no, and i dont want to think about it'.

Lolwut? I am not confused about life, I have a clear idea about it. Maybe atheists are most often people who think even more about life and death than religious people, and thus have to make themselves clear opinions about things instead of accepting that a deity does everything. What you see as confused is more a search for truth. And, I bet most atheists think a lot about death. I do, and I don't take pleasure from it, but I have come to terms with it and accepted it.
this just further prove how confused you are. you do not believe in god and you think that everything that happened are science-related. yet, you believe in something mythical and not science-proven things such as the afterlife? you can believe the soul world but not god? now i am confused. can you tell me a little bit about this afterlife? i might learn something from you.

Um 0.o I never said that I believed in afterlife. I mentioned it, after all a lot of people believe there is one. I do not. I also do not believe in anything mythical, although I really love most ancient mythologies and legends and beasts (but liking them does not mean I believe in them, mind you). I also do not believe in souls.
What I wanted to say, is, many people believe in the afterlife, and their belief differs between each other. They don't necessarily have to believe in a god to believe in an afterlife or a life cycle, that's the case for buddhists for example.
you might not be surprised if i say that some are making laws of science as his god.

I can't imagine that this even works, I mean a god is a deity, not a law.. but anyway, I'm not too surprised, though I must say those would be pretty crappy scientists.
then, may you achieve happiness in this life, sir.

Thank you, sir, may you find your happiness too.

Well, i saw the comment about praying in a life and death situation we dont really do that. The bible does tell us there is a call to action and a time of prayer and i do think about death actually i just dont freak out or fear it christians have to fear death if they know they are doing gods work . If they worry death then sorry to say they might not be actual christians one thing is to believe another is to follow. And as for proof we have many proof just people dont pay attention or they shun it go to a miracle crusade there is your proof if you think its an act then thats your opinion thinnking its fake so you shun its. Another example a woman i met personally at my church in the presence of god blood, oil and mana comes out of her hands and i saw this. When she raised her hand i saw nothing on it then she swayed the hand the other away mind this the other hand was on the microphone and no one was near her and when the hand swayed back to where i can see it i saw something sparkle it was gold. Now here is the choice in the famous words of morpheas take th blue pill you wake up on your bed and choose what you want to believe (if you dont beleive me fine go ahead i respect you desicion) but, take the red pill i'll show you how deep the rabbit hole goes (if you believe it then explore further research these miracles and make your desicion from there. As for budha people they believe that do good and you reincarnate to someone better you cant really prove this as for christianity many people have been healed inh miracle crusades. So, keep that in mind

No you don't. Sad thing is that you have absolutely no proof supporting your god. It's not an opinion is a fact, I think you are confused with belief and proof.

Cool story, I once saw a Magician do magic too. Of course I'm a logical fellow and found the trick later on the internet. Don't believe everything you see, if you're not objective and critical you will end up thinking the world will end just because someone told you so.

That's practically offensive. That like me saying getting off drugs is like not believing and you see the world as it is and if you continue to use then too bad for you.

As for budha people they believe that do good and you reincarnate to someone better you cant really prove this as for christianity many people have been healed inh miracle crusades. So, keep that in mind

Yeah sure, link me to a real research study on this and not something you watched on the internetz or on T.V. Don't discriminate another religion when yours has no proof either. Just apply the same logic you use to refute other religions on to yours.

so, if it is not random, then are you saying that it is planned? as random=coincidence and the antonym of random is planned. then who might plan everything that happened? you are contradicting your belief, man...

This is not a dilemma between random and planned. There was an infinitely long time space for the big bang to e caused by sub atomic particles and it was caused and everything else was a chain reaction. There is no need for your magic sky daddy.

i am obsessed with death because eventually, we will have to face it. it is a REALLY BIG matter that many people tend to forget about it, UNTIL they themselves are at the end of their life. so, we shouldn't discuss about death? the same thing as we shouldnt discuss about our old life ahead? be realistic, people..

This is illogical. We will die eventually so the logical thing to do is to live life to the full. Enjoy yourself, make life better for other people, these are all worthy causes. I don't want to live forever. It might be nice to live for a few thousand years but I would run out o things to do and seeing all my family and friends die wouldn't be very nice. Nothing will be achieved by being fixated on death. It is like doing a job and spending all your time thinking about retirement because it will eventually happen. You should be fixated on life because that is happening all the time.

this is where the problem lie, my friends. if everybody have their own meaning in life, then it would not be a problem if my meanings in life are to **** and kill others. if the purpose of life is to enjoy it, then it would be a problem if i enjoy life by stealing from others. but, nevertheless, all atheists are condemning terrorists, cursing suicides. why would you people do good in the first place? because it's GOOD and you feel good when you do good? then i feel good when i do bad things, is it a problem? should you jail me when i kill? who decided what's good and what not in the first place? well, i believe it were religious people who promote good in the first place.

Look, from now on you must think about what you are writing, read it over, get rid of all the logical fallacies and take out all the stereotypes. Society works better if everyone has the same basic morals so if someone breaks these then it will bring down the whole system unless there are consequences. Consequences discourage people from doing that. I think that it is peoples choice to commit suicide or not. I can't force people not to commit suicide. And terrorists break societies moral codes which is wrong. People have decided what is good and bad and decided that things which affect other people ina way they do not want is bad. So murder **** and robbery are bad. And this rule can be suspended if people have broken it so thye can be put in prison against their will. And I personally think that anyone who supports slavery, racism, sexism, **** and capital punishment over really petty things is a complete and utter ******* and anyone who says they are good is a complete and utter ******* themselves. Or misinformed. Strangely enough all of those things were recorded in the bible as being good and supported by god.

most of you people refuse to believe in god because you believe that god determines every action that you do. then, that makes a killer innocent because god is the one who control him to do so, right? well, there is a religion which teaches that we do have control over our action, however, god is the one who determines whether or not to approve our choice. it's like you do something good for your mom hoping that she will give you money for candy. however, it's your mom's choice whether to give you money or not. naturally, when you do something good, she will give you the money. however, sometimes she refuses to because she knows the unhealthiness of the candy. maybe i should go explore this religion.

No it is because we don't think a complete and utter ******* should be called god and also it is completely illogical that he exists and that there is no reason for him to exist so why should we say that he exists as it is so unlikely. Also if he exists why doesn't he make his presence known. We have not heard a single religious argument for his existence that is logical.

let me explain what actually an atheist believes. he believes that in the end he will become nothing, leaving his life as a joke which is later forgotten. okay, let me put it this way, you are doing good things in this world for the sake of your children, then at the end both you and your children die a meaningless death. okay then, so you decided to live for the sake of humanity, then in the end everybody will die a meaningless death. and in the ultimate end, this Earth will finally meet its end, destroying everything, human's history, pride, achievements, good deeds, and even this discussion to dust. how is that meaningful? even if we do good things for the sake of others, we won't be able to get any benefits from it after we die, because we are, err, nothing.

No you are explaining what really stupid theists believe atheists believe. We have no unified beliefs other than we do not believe god exists. We do not "all believe something". Please get this idea into you tiny little brain. And an atheist believes that there are 6 billion people on the planet and probably a lot more than that but anyway you need to do something that most other people can't do to be remembered. The pharaohs are still remembered and they were thousands of years ago. How hard is it to remember a century or so? And you children will still have children and so will their children so you will be continuing your species survival (probably). many scientists and inventors made the world a better place for everyone and the earth will survive for many billions of years. People don't care about stuff that far in the future they can only picture the near future. And the stuff will have meaning for those billions of years so it is not meaningless. And people feel good about doing it so it does benefit them. Everything people do benefits them even if it is only through feeling good.

*giggle*. so, as you mentioned earlier, you are fine doing good things because society said so. or your mom said so. or you said so. just as long as god dont say so. maybe they are your 'god' without you realizing it.

No, we are brought up believing in a set of morals and if we see that tehy benefit society we keep them. This makes things good or bad. And god says nothing it is just stupid goat herders who occasionally got things right. They are not our gods as they are not incredibly powerful they are just people. People do not need a god to worship.

well, when we are at the brink of our death, let's say we are barely clinging at a rope at the roof of a 40-storey abandoned building, and the rope is jusst about to break. what will one think? "oh, god, please save me!". "i hope a miracle will happen and i will be saved!".

Those are phrases ingrained into society and have lost all theological meaning. And you are basically saying that the only reason people believe in god is because they hope he exists or because they want him to. If asked they would not say that this has proven god exists.

i think they think like that because it's there in their holy book(s). Books are the source of belief of some major religions, for example, the koran for muslims and bible for christians, Hindu also has its own books. so, to counter their believes, one has to study the books. they are also unexplainable things in the holy book such as the koran mentioning about big bang. that's what i heard, nevertheless.

No, people just take a it of their holy book and say this talks about the big bang when it just says something about an explosion. They are easily explainable as a coincidence. If they knew that why doesn't the bible know that pi does not equal 3. And I take it that all christians believe in slavery, ****, murder, racism and exism as being good as it is all in the bible.

so, that just answers my question 'if we feel better doing bad things, than am i guilty if i do it?' well , i will feel better and helps the 'bad society'. yeah..

You should just not do bad things. Bad things are decided by society. If you do things that negatively affect other people they are bad. And all societies think they are good.

how does this not making any sense? from what i observe, atheists are often confused with their life, but guess what? they just ignore it.

ATHEISTS HAVE ONLY ONE UNIFIED BELIEFS AND IT IS NOT THIS! WHY ARE YOU SO STUPID THAT YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND THIS! We have life so logically we should enjoy it. Death is unavoidable so why dwell on it.

this just further prove how confused you are. you do not believe in god and you think that everything that happened are science-related. yet, you believe in something mythical and not science-proven things such as the afterlife? you can believe the soul world but not god? now i am confused. can you tell me a little bit about this afterlife? i might learn something from you.

Thats what I mean you dont even give it benefit of a doubt "hey maybe its real" but, like i said its what you believe but, it is indeed real. I tell you the truth I didnt really think this lady could do that but, when I saw it with my own eyes I still thought it was fake but, its real. Doctors are actually trying to study this phenomenon.

That's practically offensive. That like me saying getting off drugs is like not believing and you see the world as it is and if you continue to use then too bad for you.

I am not saying that believing me will make your life of candy and unicorns all I am saying is I am giving you facts but, if you feel like calling it a "cheap magic trick" even though it is indeed fact then go ahead. I can't force you to believe.

sorry but in no way is a 'miracle' any sort of fact, it cannot be proven, there si no evidence for it apart form human sight which is unreliable at best

there are a miriad of reasons for why she could have been 'healed' not leats a placebo affect

your miracles can in no scientific way be proved nor can reincarnation, if you really respected their religion then you wouldnt refer to them as buddha people, they are called buddhists
