I am going to a trip soon and this just came to mind. What are your toughts on this high security in the airports? there has been many things going on with not allowing people on the plane because of their religion and things like that. any thoughts?

I'm sure we could easily replace body scanners with security that actually goes on air flights with the passengers.

Not sure if they did or not but I remember seeing a newer scanner that replaces the very detailed image of the person from the inside out with an indistinct image that will signal if it detect something odd. Would you say that makes a difference?

If protection means we must treat normal people, including children, as criminals, then it's not worth the protection.

I don't usually agree with you on these sorts of topics but I agree with you here.
I also have to wonder what do we consider as being too far? The whole system is reactionary.

The point of a terrorist attack isn't necessarily to kill people but to scare the populace. In this case the terrorists won.

Agree with this.
But it doesn't mean that we shouldn't do nothing.

Yeah, but a mall is not a moving missile, which could kill over 3k people. The max casualties that you could get from a mall are a couple hundred, with non multi-billion structure damage. That's still tragic, but not on the same level as an airplane.

There's a slight chance the pilot could be a terrorist. Oh, there's a chance of terrorist attacks happening anyway despite security, might as well make airlines illegal in general.

This sounds like a much more acceptable alternative.

I've done a little thinking, if we had guards accompany the passengers, they could potentially protect us from hijackers. They couldn't however, protect us from bombs. I'm curious, how often have terrorists used real bombs to hijack airplanes, let alone destroy them? I'm sure it's been done, but how often? If it's been done once, which would mean 300 people getting killed, what are the odds you would get involved in one of these accidents?

I know I sound anti-security, but I'm not. I believe security must be had at a level in which the people can be comfortable traveling.

I'm also waiting for a case where someone hijacked a plane using nail clippers. : )

And nobody is saying we shouldn't.

Hope this was sarcasm.
I'm sure it's been done, but how often?

February 21st 1970- A Swissair plane on a flight to Israel is blown up in mid air by Palestinian terrorists.
April 21st 1970- A bomb explodes aboard a Philippines airliners. All 36 aboard are killed.
January 26th 1972- A bomb explodes on a Yugoslav plane killing all but one passenger
1974- September 8th Libyan terrorist plant a bomb on board a TWA plane flying from Athens to Rome, all 85 passengers are killed.
Might be more later on but this starts off the list.

That wouldn't be awkward at all.

I asked specifically about bombs on airplanes. You listed 4. I didn't look thoroughly through the list, but I found 1 other incident involving a bomb on an airplane in the 80s.

Five airplanes that were bombed, I'm assuming all from the inside, out of how many thousands upon thousands of airlines? We have to consider as well the different security measures at the time and places that these bombings occurred. What were the security measures? Where the bombs too big to carry on a person? If so, then were they smuggled through luggage?

I've never heard of a bomb carrying terrorist clinging to the outside of a plane. (not sure if you mean by missile maybe)

Also take into account when lists are updated. Notice the last year is 13 years ago.

Regardless, the number of planes destroyed by bombs is incredibly small, ESPECIALLY compared to all of the air planes in this world.

Well maybe instead of hiring people to guard the planes maybe we can train the flight attendents to guard them. As for bombs well, maybe as a last reasort there could be a device on the door of the plane that looks for bombs specificly.

Those people who always seem to be young women? Defending the plane against terrorist? Good luck with that.

And what device finds bombs specifically? Bomb dogs maybe, but they are not really a device...

If we can create bombs small enough to hide on children, are we able to create bombs small enough to fit inside a woman? If there's a pat down, I know one place a woman won't be patted.

Hmm, women our new potential threats? Should we go a bit more beyond simple &quotat" downs? Start putting on the gloves maybe?

I'm sure we can make one. But when you think about it the odds of it happening are so small, however when it does hijaking can be a tragity.

Just wait for the rectal bomber so they start requiring mandatory **** searches at check points?
