I think evolution should not be taught in schools. I am a Christian, and I believe in intelligent design. I think I speak for all Christians when I say that evolution should not be taught as fact in schools.

Evolution should definitely be taught in skls. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a redneck american idiot. There was a court case in the 50s between evolutionists and creationists as a biology teacher in alabama taught evolution on purpose to get arrested and bring the case to court. Top lawyers from both side of the fence defended their cases. Evolutionism won easily and the opposition were embarrasingly discredited. So if u wanna teach creationism thats fine but only in ur backwater overly religious rascist intolerant world(ie deep south usa)

Hmm. All I have to say here is that evolution is the best we have in terms of scientific theories. It is science, and as such, a work in progress. Being wrong comes a second nature to those researching the theory.

On the other hand, Creationism and ID are rooted in belief. Belief tends to be hard to shake. A believer is ever convinced that his belief is right to the exclusion of all others.

Belief and knowledge are quite different. Passing one off as the other asks for trouble.

So, teaching creationism as science is rather stupid. How can you call something "science" if it cannot stand being wrong?

@necromancer: The FSM finally makes his appearance! RAmen.

@woody_7007: need help with that big brush you're painting with? I grew up in a semi-rural part of Georgia, which I would consider deep south, and I'm defending evolution all over this thread. I'm friends with some rednecks that accept evolution. I'm friends with theists that accept evolution. Could we just go with people that don't accept evolution are willfully ignorant, and not insult the people we're trying to explain things to? Also, could we avoid insulting people that accept evolution, ie, those of us that live in the deep south?

@WildStriker404: Excellent points all. I salute you.

@ kaneth i dont mean offence to all even when i generelise except i had some bad experiences living in the deep south that im not gonna talk about in this thread involving rednecks which is why i have such strong views about them

Craze77- There is an incredibly immense amount of evidence supporting evolution. We can use radioactive dating on rocks that go back millions and billions of years and have ancient fossils showing a clear evolutionary progression. We have genetic data showing the links between modern species; did you know are DNA is 98% like that of a chimpanzee and more than 50% that of a banana. We can also show evolution clearly happens in a much swifter time scale. For example, in the 1940's penicillin became a very popular antibiotic, now we rarely use it as much of the target bacteria has developed immunities(say 99% die, and 1% live because of their immunities or underexposure; the survivors reproduce and spread to a new host; the new host is infected and takes penicillin; 50% die;and the cycle of evolutionary progression for a single gene repeats until nearly all members of this bacteria population possess this gene). Another example is the Darwin Chip- Researchers put a soup of RNA molecules (a molecule used to temporarily contain genetic information in your body) and inefficient RNA ligase in a tiny chamber; they allow it to duplicate itself for several hours, due to its mistakes in copying the new RNA is either more or less efficient than the previous one. The researchers then removed some RNA to lessen the supply and cause a struggle of the fittest; only the most efficient ligase remains. After 70 hours of this process they extract and analyze the RNA to find it is 90 times more efficient than the original. This clearly indicates that evolution is constantly happening in our world. http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn13611-darwin-chip-brings-evolution-into-the-classroom.html

Wot and creationism is? do u have any proof no ok oh youve got a book written hundreds of years ago ok then it has to be tru. Are u kidding me? There is lots of scientific evidence supporting evolution but not even a hint of gods existence

I'm Christian and I still believe in evolution. God and evolution don't have to contradict each other. If people could learn to open their fucking minds we wouldn't have this problem.

yeah because it is a straight fact and there is evidence to prove it.

here is the solution:

teach 1 chapter on evolution, one on creationism, and give all the other theories in the textbook. That way, students will get all sides of the issue.

I agree with Megamickel, we don't have to make this a big problem, people can believe what they want and no one should force them what to believe.

My thing is...

teach all ot the theories or none of them.

Even better:

While teaching the scientific method, the instructor ought to teach students about the value of research and experimentation. Basically, say: "It's okay to be wrong; that's what science is all about."

If schools want to teach creationism, then they ought to teach that it is not science, mainly because those pushing the so-called theory tend not to tolerate challenges to its veracity. Neither do they use the scientific method to prove or disprove the hypothesis made.

Technacilly, Evolution should be included in science class as it has a great deal to do with Geology...I think...I'm not a scientist so I don't really know but still it should be included into the science circulum for no other reason then the fact to teach about modern science theorys and facts and such...

I don't really know why this is a big problem in USA, ppl who claim to be an "industrializad country", have issues accepting your own communutiy's believes, if people want to believe stuff written a long long time ago just let them do that, but at the same time, people who believe that let other people beilieve in the evidence that support modern accurate theories. Im not from USA, but in my coutry who is said to be a "developing country" we dont have that kind of trubles, at school kids are said there is the creationism as long as many other theories that explein not only humans but modern life itself. I am studying Biology, and the same is at this educational lvl, teachers tell us which theories there are including ID and evolution.
Could someone tell me whats the big deal in letting others take what they want and show to kids all the possible theories there are?
