I'm surprised that the riots have been going for 3 days already and nobody has made a thread about it yet. Then again, I only learnt about it today. London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Croydon are all going up in smoke (to varying degrees), apparently. Reasons are as yet not fully identified but speculation has it that youth unemployment and dissatisfaction with the austerity measures are primary factors.
Anybody got any insights? Especially from the Poms.
Because the police officer that killed Mr. Duggan discharged two shots - the first shot hit him in the chest and killed him and the second one either missed or went right through his body and into the radio/communicator of the other police officer.
lol. Riots because of a police officer shooting a guy. They sure have backbones those...euh whatever you call people that live in England. I mean this stuff happens all the time here, but Americans are too dumb or misinformed to actually do something.
I can't believe these riots are getting to the extent they are! Obviously something went wrong for their to be such an uproar. Usually when the people rise against authority, that means authority may have done something bad and even worse, tried to justify it.
Warning:Both links in this post lead to videos that contain graphic footage.

I believe that there are things that Americans are doing that have a greater impact than what you think, but I also agree that Americans can do more or that there are things Americans are too stubborn to change that can fix many of the police brutality issues.
I watched a video and apparently police brutality is going down as a result of more people having camera phones because more policemen are becoming exposed.
However, there are other forms of police brutality, where footage is available, yet ignored by many Americans.
The first riot apparently started because Mark Duggans family were waiting outside a police station in Tottenham, when the police wouldn't speak to them it all state kicking off, the sum got wind of it and used it as an exscuse to riot, I also think alot of people are very very ngry about all the corruption recently
loloynage, this has nothing to do with politics, this is the dregs, and the scum of our society seeing an opportunity to take what they want, they feel entitled because of the welfare state we have created, and they feel able because of the weak justice system that refuses to punish petty crime, the police have apparently been predicting it for years
These people were allowed to thrive under labours watch, and now they have the audacity to blame the tories cuts.
and they feel able because of the weak justice system that refuses to punish petty crime,
I'm sorry, for a second I thought you just praised autocracy.

Oh yea, that's what I meant. Many Americans try to show the brutality of police abuse, but the public doesn't seem to care, and the ones that do care can't do anything because they are very rare.
On the other hand, caring seems to go too far, or at least beyond rationality.
Seattle, where I'm from, is known to have one of the highest rates of police brutality in the United States, and while that's extraordinarily bad, many people here turn to Anarchy as a solution, and think the best option is to completely abolish the police force.
Is it just me, or does that sound like a bad idea?
Is it just me, or does that sound like a bad idea?
Bad idea. Its probably just a loud minority. I'd be pissed if someone I knew came back home mugged by a cop, too. Seattle needs a cop-cop force. They're allowed to be just as brutal to the police as the police are to the people. ... Except that would just aggravate the problem.
call us Limeys if you wanna be a little offensive
That is sad. Would that really offend people? I can't imagine taking offense to a word like Limey.
and yeah, I'm agreeing with everyone else. I don't think its because the guy was shot by the police. Its a sad thing, but the riots seem to be more like 'Oh, the authority did something. Now its time to screw with them'
