It seems that Kim Jong Il has died, most likely leaving his son Kim Jong Un in charge of North Korea.

As this is a forum for discussion I was thinking we could talk about how this might effect the world and the foreign relations between North Korea and other countries.

I'm not really sure what to say about the topic, as I know little about Kim Jong Un or even if he really is in charge now. I would guess this could cause some problems, but as for the scope I couldn't say.

Good riddance. Hopefully his son isn't as psychotic, and if he is, we're going to need to do something about it.

Even if he isn't, there's no telling whether the army will attempt a coup or not. Unlike his father, he isn't that well entrenched and experienced as his father when he took over from his own father.

Wouldn't they follow him on the grounds that they think he's the son of some kind of god or something?

This reminds me of how in Homefront, Kim Jong-il died on January 2, 2012.

Anyways, if the military succeeds with a coup, wouldn't there be a large chance of a war against South Korea? Americans need a war again, so they would probably try to deploy troops. That couldn't be good.

The upper echelons aren't so easily brainwashed. They can see the sorry state of their nation, and how frail their ''god'' was.

Experts on North Korea said they expect government and military leaders to rally around Kim Jong Un, at least publicly, in the short term. But, they said, his succession is not certain, and South Korea, the U.S. and North Koreaâs northern neighbor and closest ally, China, should be prepared for possible instability if there were a protracted power struggle.

A key player in any power struggle, experts said, would be Jang Song-thaek, Kim Jong Il's brother-in-law and a high-ranking member of the North's National Defense Commission. Jang could facilitate Kim Jong Un's rise to power or take a more prominent role in running the country himself.

It might increase chances of a war to distract the impoverished North Koreans from sedition in a popular war.

Why does America need a war? Why does everyone think so? Americans are increasingly sick and tired of their foreign adventures and are relieved that Obama pulled out of Iraq. Furthermore, given the dire state of their economy, why would they even want a war? Iraq cost over a trillion.

(i have only readed the op sofar)

i guess there are 3 options.
1. he is trained right by his father and evrything stays the same.
2. he secretly disagreed whit his father. and he will try to make contact whit the rest of the world
3. he is worse then his father. and will attack some country soon.

just wait and see =P

Most likely number 3.

Most likely number 3.

i think that also. but not because he is worse then his father tho.
i think he wants to proof himself to the world and the n-k people.
and when he knows that we all respect him as much as kim jong il then he will rest again like his father did.

Am I the only one thinking that this would be the perfect time to get China to drop this sorry excuse for a nation, and allow us with South Korea to invade them in a mainly SK operation with US support? This could be the chance to reunify the Koreas that the world has been looking for.

Why does America need a war?

A large part of America's economy has been based on war for the last 60 years, without a war we need to find something to fill the gap. I'm not saying thats a good thing though.

The upper echelons aren't so easily brainwashed. They can see the sorry state of their nation, and how frail their ''god'' was.

I'm not so sure they care about the sorry state of their nation, as most of them are military people in a well treated military. And while they could see their "god" was frail, I think they were relying on the supposed love the people had for him to maintain order.

Am I the only one thinking that this would be the perfect time to get China to drop this sorry excuse for a nation, and allow us with South Korea to invade them in a mainly SK operation with US support?

That would be quite difficult. While North Korea's people are starving the military is thriving. It would not be easy to take over North Korea without significant losses.

I see big problems in the near future for N. Korea. There is a big power struggle between the military and the working communist party.

China won't abandon North Korea because they both are Communist heavy-hitters in the region, and though China's is more veiled they both share animosity towards America and South Korea. As to China "allowing" an invasion, neither the U.S. nor S.K. needs their permission! America is the most powerful nation on Earth, and South Korea is our ally and friend in the region. If and when the time comes for military operations in that area, we will take action regardless of China's opinion.

As far as re-unification goes though, this is potentially a good opportunity to free N.K. The regime there has done everything in its power to suppress the facts, but the truth is that N.K. is one of the poorest and most backwards countries in the region, and the people suffer for it everyday. An invasion by S.K. and the U.S. would be the best thing to happen to them in a very long time, because with our soldiers would come food, medical aid, and the resources to begin rebuilding and modernizing N.K.

Then they'll cut us off economically. They're a good trading partner. They could also call in that trillion dollars we owe them.
