Something that bugs me about films at the moment is everything seems to have to have a sequel. Pirates of the Caribbean would have been just fine as a one off film, but 3 sequels followed it, each getting progressively worse.
For anyone who hasn't seen it, it is an early '80s cult classic film based on the exploits of a lawman who hunts rogue androids. It brought Ruger Hauer to our screens along with Harrison Ford and Daryl Hannah. For the time the special effects were brilliant, the story was one you could really get into and the climax to the film was unexpected.
But a sequel? Why? The film ended, well I won't tell you the end in case you haven't seen it, but lets just say it didn't lead to a sequel. 30 years on, they haven't found a writer, they have no idea what the story will be and they have no cast lined up, but they announce there will be a sequel.
Not all films need or deserve a sequel. What next? A sequel to 300? 301 - The Revenge of the Persians?
Anyone else think this is weird? Or do you have another film that had a sequel you thought wasn't needed, or one that did need a sequel but it was never made?
Sequels are basically either because they didn't finish the story of the movie/book, or money. And the remakes of the older ones are usually classics that people think they can improve on.......oh wait, they are making a sequel of an 80's movie??? That is just some nut thinking that this will be a hit. Don't be suprised if it sinks before it even casts off. Some movies do deserve sequels though, such as Toy Story. That is one of the greatest and well made movie series ever. But I have not yet seen an amazing sequel for a while. I am hoping that the Avatar sequel doesn't suck as much as I think it will.
The first Avatar (I assume you mean the blue people) had a story that was so cliche, so poorly thought out, its a joke. Unobtanium? Really? Visual affects are amazing, but thats really it.
I don't think the sequel will be any better. You just kicked all the people off the planet. Now what? Only option is that they come back, and get their butts kicked again. I'll only go to see it so I can gawk at how great the film looks.
I didn't even see the first Avatar. It fell into the same hole as Slum Dog Millionaire for being an overhyped film.
Tend to agree it is about the money, but surely there must be a point where film makers realise that even though the first film was a hit, a sequel would just appear daft?
For one; Pirates Of The Caribbean Curse of the Black Pearl paled against On Stranger Tides Avatar was amazing in 3D, burt I do agree with it's worthless plot and no background story Thirdly; There's gonna be a second Blade Runner? Oh, boy. Bad choice.
On Stranger Tides was probably closer to Curse of the Black Pearl than any of the other Pirates of the Caribbean, but it lacked the fun factor that CotBP had. Also I thought the music wasn't quite as good as it could have been... probably a strange perspective, but then we all enjoy films at different levels.
Dead Man's Chest was dire and the World's end just ended up being bloated and convoluted.
Back to On Stranger Tides, it was better for the absence of Kiera Knightly and Orlando Bloom, both of them just distracted from the thrust of the films since CotBP. Penelope Cruz was the perfect choice to be pair up with Johnny Depp, and Ian McShane made a great BlackBeard... but you got the feeling that Geoffrey Rush had been thrown in for good measure. Surely he's the lynch pin of the whole saga?
Very few sequels outdo the originals. Terminator 2, The Dark Knight, and Aliens are the only great ones I can think of right now.

I'm not saying all of the sequels were bad (except for Jaws), but they seemed like filler to make money and didn't really progress any characters or ideas beyond what the original did.
For Pirates of the Caribbean, the fact that it had "Curse of the Black Pearl" after the title made it already a series, as they obviously planned for more. Dead Man's chest was just to make money, At World's End was a real downer, but they picked themselves back halfway up the ladder with On Stranger Tides.
The movie I'm really looking forward to seeing is Sherlock Holmes 2. The first one was great!
So did I, but there wasn't much character development and it basically followed the plot of the original: undead lovers trying to be together and rule the world as immortals, an ancient book causes their downfall, Imhotep goes back to hell. It was fine as an action movie though.
You can add National Treasure to that list.
Yeah. The sequel was completely unneeded. The first one had its flaws too: If the first clue was 'The secret lies with Charlotte', that means his father was searching for 20ish years and never even figured out that it was a ship, let alone that there were more clues.

Star Wars sequels and prequels have always been nice and keep getting better.
I'm surprised no one added the later sequels of Saw in yet. And I think the Amazing Spiderman would just fail badly. Toby, Kirsten and the director already quit. :X

That series failed the moment they announced they were continuing it. The third one sucked horribly and the 4th I didn't even bother looking into. I didn't like the movie to begin with honestly.
Someone mentioned The Dark Knight earlier and I don't feel like putting it in quotes. I am going to have trouble going to see the next one for the simple fact that Heath Ledger has no chance of being in it. For those of you who don't know, he was Joker, and was absolutely amazing. That was one of the best sequels of any movie.
